Mary J. Blige opened DANCING WITH THE STARS tonight to an excitable audience after all the melodrama of last night’s “most memorable year” show. If last night’s show was heavy tonight’s was the opposite. It was as if a load had been lifted. DWTS therapy was in session. And then came the shocker! Kristin Cavallari was eliminated from the show. Wow! Although she and partner Mark Ballas tied for third place with three other couples – Daivd & Kym, Rob & Cheryl, and Hope & Maks – she just didn’t have the pull the other three had evidently.

So, how did this all play out? Well, first safe was J.R. Martinez and Karina Smirnoff, fittingly so. Then the first place team of Derek Hough and Ricki Lake. And in the first shocker of the night…Chaz Bono is safe! Whaaaaaaattt?! His following can only be compared to that of Bristol Palin who made it all the way to third place with little dance technique and zero performance ability. Surely if Bono made it then next in line to be ousted would be Nancy Grace…ah, but no! Grace, too, escaped elimination, how…or more importantly…why? It goes to show if you are current, you are trendy and thereby you have an audience. Rob Kardashian also was set free to dance again with partner Cheryl Burke.

The encore this week was given to Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani, who tied for second with Martinez and Smirnoff. However, they had to wait another 30 minutes to find out that they, too, were safe.

An odd six degrees of DWTS video segment about all the ties the couples have with one another was interesting, although some of those “ties” were a bit of a stretch. A performance by the new DWTS Troupe and then Macys Stars of Dance strutted their stuff and soon Estelle belted out “The Twist”. Until, that is, the twist master himself made a surprise appearance – Chubby Checker. Although hyped the night before by host Tom Bergeron, Len Goodman worked his way onto the dance floor for all of a minute…whoop dee doo!

One more time for Mary J. Blige and then it came down to the last five. Phillips was finally off the hook as was David Arquette and his partner Kym Johnson. In jeopardy were Carson Kressley & Anna Trebunskaya, Hope Solo & Maks Chmerkovskiy and Kristin Cavallari & Mark Ballas. Kressley was first to be relieved to know he was staying put. An audible gasp was heard throughout the studio when Bergeron announced that it was Cavallari and Ballas who were eliminated. Nine couples remain. Stay tuned.
