X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Sebastian Shaw

FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #129- 1980

So Sebastian Shaw isn’t part of the team line up, but he is a character that has been harassing the X-Men for the better part of the last few decades. Shaw is the head of the New York Hellfire Club, which on the outside looks like a kink club for humans, but in reality is a haven (of sorts) for mutants. Shaw has the ability to absorb kinetic energy and use it in displays of dramatically increased speed or strength. Shaw is a billionaire and has been behind several different plots against the X-Men, once even funding the Sentinel (giant mutant hunting robots) program so he could keep it under his thumb. Most recently Shaw had been imprisoned by the X-Men, but was released by Emma Frost so she could deal with him and bring closure to her troubled past.

IN THE MOVIE:

Shaw (played by Kevin Bacon) has the same power absorbing abilities, but they also grant him immortality. He is a HUGE part of Magneto’s past, and his sole mission is to rule the world as a king of mutants. He’s a lot younger looking in the movie, and charismatic than the overbearing pony-tailed nut job of the comic books, and therefore he actually comes across as a somewhat likeable villain. He is also instrumental in giving Magneto one of his more famous fashion statements.
