X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theatres! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Charles Xavier

SUPERHERO NAME: Professor X

FIRST APPEARANCE: [Uncanny] X-Men #1- 1963

Professor X has been there since the beginning, or else the team wouldn’t be called the X-Men, now would it? Charles Xavier is one of the Marvel Universe’s foremost telepaths. A man of vision, Xavier has made it his life’s work to seek out mutants and provide a school for them to feel safe at and to learn to use their various powers for good. While he was a young man in Israel he met Erik Magnus Lensherr, a man able to control magnetic fields and metals. This meeting was to define the entire course of their lives as they would be pitted against each other time and again for the future of mutant kind. The most common images of Xavier have him in a wheelchair, but he does regain the use of his legs from time to time from different sources. Currently he resides on Utopia island in San Francisco Bay with the rest of the X-Men, but is no longer a leader or even much of a mentor as many of his past mistakes have come to light and tarnished the man others believed him to be.

IN THE MOVIE:

Charles Xavier Iplayed by James McAvoy) is a telepathic ladies man, who likes to drink and pick up women while his ‘sister’ looks on longingly. He is a much more charming and charismatic character than the younger Charles in the comics, and he has all of his hair (In pretty much every flashback  even when he is younger Chuck is always still bald).  How he comes to form the X-Men involves the government, and his time with Magneto is pretty short before they part ways. Also his involvement with a wheelchair has a different more Ultimate X-Men flavor to it.
