X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theatres! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Moira MacTaggert

FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #96- 1975

Even though she’s not a mutant, Moira MacTaggart is an important part of the X-Men universe. She was at one point a lover of Charles Xavier, and her son Proteus could have been on of the most powerful and evil mutants of all time if he hadn’t been stopped by the X-Men. Moira is a geneticist, and she and the paths of various X-teams have crossed multiple times in the comics. Moira’s home base was Muir Island, and the facilities she ran there were invaluable to the X-Men time and again when faced with different crisis from forming a new team of X-Men when the regular team was thought dead, to fighting to cure the Legacy Virus which was killing mutants off left and right. Currently Moira is deceased, but she has been resurrected recently for a short time and no one ever really stays dead in comics, especially the X-Men.

IN THE MOVIE:

Moira (as played by Rose Byrne in the movie) is less of a romantic interest for Charles Xavier. She is a tough CIA agent, a woman working in a profession full of men, struggling to be seen and accepted. She is investigating the Hellfire Club and Sebastian Shaw, and it is her direct involvement that causes the formation of the X-Men and gives them government subsidizing for their first missions. It doesn’t seem that she has any science inclination in the film – however they could push her in that direction for future installments.
