X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Emma Frost

FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #129- 1980

Emma Frost, originally introduced as the Hellfire Club’s White Queen, has had an interesting past. Hailing from a wealthy Massachusetts family, she struck out on her own after familiar troubles became more than she could bear. She made her way to Boston and eventually ended up in New York’s Hellfire Club. She was actually approached by Professor Xavier to become part of his second team of X-Men, but when she refused, he erased her memory of the incident. Emma is one of the most powerful telepaths on the planet, and has a secondary mutation allowing her to turn herself into diamond. For a woman who started out a villain, she hasn’t done badly for herself, and now is one of the leaders of the X-Men and romantically entangled with Cyclops.

IN THE MOVIE:

Emma (played by January Jones) is a beautiful telepath with the ability to already turn herself to diamond (which was a trick that the comic version didn’t acquire until much later on in life).  She seems content to be Sebastian Shaw’s flunky and believes in his plans to rule the world. Emma seems a lot less bitchy and outspoken, but perhaps all of those things will come in time if they do more ‘period’ X-MEN movies.
