X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Unknown

FIRST APPEARANCE: Uncanny X-Men #428 – 2003

Let’s start with Azazel, one of the lesser known characters in X-Men. He’s a relatively recent character in the scope of the X-MEN universe, first appearing in UNCANNY X-MEN #428 in 2003. So needless to say he is a far cry from a first class student at Xavier’s. He is the father of Nightcrawler, and rules in another dimension. He claims to be the source of ‘the Devil’ in Christianity, and has fathered several demonic mutant children to one purpose – bringing him back from the other dimension he had been banished to. His sole goal is to rule the world and to purge it of humanity. He has teleportation powers and the ability to disguise his appearance. Not only is he Nightcrawler’s dad, but he knocked boots with Mystique to father our favorite fuzzy blue elf.

VS.

IN THE MOVIE:

There is absolutely no discussion of the origin of Azazel (played by Jason Flyming) in the film. He is simply a teleporting mutant who works as an enforcer for Sebastian Shaw. He seems bad to the core and has absolutely no qualms about killing anyone. He is also an accomplished swordsman, which might be a nod to the swashbuckling skills of his son Nightcrawler in the comic books.
