X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Angel Salvadore

FIRST APPEARANCE: New X-Men #118 – 2001

Next up in our roster we have Angel (no not he pretty blonde man from the original team), this Angel is Angel Salvadore. Again, a pretty new mutant, appearing on the scene in 2001, she was part of Grant Morrison’s run on X-MEN. Angel has a fly-like mutation, which gives her wings which can produce ultrasonic vibrations, and she spews corrosive acid. She is probably most famous for reproducing bizarre fly/bird mutant children with her boyfriend Beak (who literally looks like a bird man). Both Angel and Beak currently are de-powered and normal and only one of their children is still a mutant, following events that caused most of the mutants in the world to lose their powers.

IN THE MOVIE:

Angel (played by Zoe Kravitz) is a stripper that Magneto and Charles find together. She has her wings, but they have the ability to look like tattoos when she doesn’t have them extended. Her acid vomiting is more of a fireball vomiting in the film, and seems more weaponized than a necessary act to eat. She is a lot more self-assured than her comic book counterpart and has a swagger that the comic Angel would envy.
