Reportedly, some […]Read On »

Blu-ray Review: CARS 2

CARS 2 Blu-ray | ©2011 Walt Disney Home Entertainment

Voices: Owen Wilson, Larry the Cable Guy, Michael Caine, Emily Mortimer Writer: Ben Queen Director: John Lasseter Distributor: Walt Disney Home Entertainment Suggested Retail Price: $39.99 I’ve never been more disappointed in a Pixar film than I was with CARS 2 – an abomination if there ever was one with the Pixar organization whose batting average has been impeccable since TOY STORY. Even when the movies have been just okay (THE INCREDIBLES, RATATOUILLE), they’ve still had some value and some great humor/animation thrown into the mix. Even the brilliant TOY STORY 3 shouldn’t have worked, but the Pixar team found […]Read On »

CD review: CARS 2 original soundtrack

CARS 2 soundtrack | ©2011 Walt Disney Records

Though not  nearly as well reviewed a Pixar film as UP, but a whole lot of fun to listen to in any case, is CARS 2. Where Randy Newman’s more straight-laced approach was more fitting for the original’s desert-bound setting of Radiator Springs, Giacchino’s now taken over the driver’s seat with a considerable shot of adrenalin for this commercially flashy, globe-hopping sequel. Fans of Giacchino’s spy stylings for THE INCREDIBLES, ALIAS and MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 3 (not to mention his ultra-help sore for SPEED RACER) will be happy with the oodles of hip 007 / Derek Flint / Austin Powers action […]Read On »

It brings back not only the CGI animated automotive universe of the first film (sans people or animals), but also the main characters, the learn-important-life-lessons through-line and even […]Read On »

The X List: Assignment X’s Best of 2010 – Movies

TRUE GRIT poster | ©2010 Paramount Pictures

The best films of 2010, in the opinion of this reviewer (who still has to catch up with THE FIGHTER, WINTER’S BONE and several other acclaimed releases): THE SOCIAL NETWORK Normally, people working with computers is one of the most boring things that can be put on screen. Director David Fincher, writer Aaron Sorkin and an across-the-board brilliant cast headed up by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake leave the computers in the background and illustrate the dynamics of friendship and ambition in a way that is remarkably compelling and universal. The fact that the film is about the […]Read On »

The Dork Side: To be or not to 3-D?

AVATAR - IMAX movie poster | © 2009 20th Century Fox

I blame AVATAR for this whole thing. AVATAR, you owe the world an apology. You came out last year with the most amazing 3-D and now every crapsterpiece movie that comes out is in 3-D. Sure, there were movies that did 3-D before AVATAR, and some of them did it well (CORALINE). But ever since AVATAR the movie studios have started releasing even more movies in 3-D hoping to capture some of those unobtainum dollars. But, really, none of those movies put in the time, effort and money to look as great as the 3-D in AVATAR did. Don’t believe […]Read On »

Blu-ray Review: TOY STORY 3 – 4-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION

© Walt Disney Home Entertainment |TOY STORY 3 - Blu-ray

Rating: G Voices: Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Ned Beatty, Joan Cusack, Don Rickles, Michael Keaton, John Ratzenberg Writers: Michael Arndt based on a story by John Lasseter, Andrew Stanton & Lee Unkrich Director: Lee Unkrich Distributor: Walt Disney Home Entertainment Suggested Retail Price: $45.99 Even when Pixar is producing sequels to their hit films, they manage to do things right. First, they had the unenviable task of following up their first full length feature TOY STORY with TOY STORY 2 and (surprise) exceeding all expectations. Now, 11 years after the second round-up, they’ve finally produced TOY STORY 3, which could […]Read On »
