SDCC 2011 News: Justin Timberlake is IN TIME with new science-fiction film at Comic-Con

Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried | ©2011 20th Century Fox

With Justin Timberlake purposely putting his own successful music career on hold to focus on a budding movie career, it’s been quite surprising how fast that career has taken off with a major role in last year’s THE SOCIAL NETWORK to this year’s roles in the comedies as BAD TEACHER and this Friday’s FRIENDS WITH BENEFITS. Now Timberlake steps into the science-fiction genre with Andrel Niccol’s latest film IN TIME about a world where the rich can buy the ability to live longer, while the poor have to fight to survive. In the film, Timberlake is Will Salas who is […]Read On »

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards – The Complete List of Winners

THE KING'S SPEECH wins Best Picture at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday, February 27, 2011 | ©2011 A.M.P.A.S.

There’s not much to say about the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, except that as much as they promised to be young and hip by hiring James Franco and Anne Hathaway to host, it was still the same old Academy Awards. Translation: few surprises, a dearth of actual laughs and predominantly canned speeches lacking any emotion or wit. That said, THE KING’S SPEECH took home the Best Picture title, while frontrunners Colin Firth won for Best Actor in SPEECH and Natalie Portman for Best Actress in BLACK SWAN. The full list of winners are below … Best Picture Iain Canning, Emile […]Read On »

The Dork Side: Let’s get ranty with the STARS, the Oscars, BEASTLY & more

BEASTLY movie poster | ©2011 CBS Films

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t limit my ranting to just one subject this week. There are just too many things that make me ranty. Dancing with the Polarizing Political Figures Professional witch-denier and all-around dummy Christine O’Donnell says she has been approached to be on ABC’s DANCING WITH THE STARS. In a related story, I’m going to file a class action suit against ABC for claiming that this show features stars. Christine O’Donnell? Really? What, you couldn’t get Michael Vick? ABC, have you thought about asking Ben Roethlisberger? If you are lucky, he might even rape one of your dancers. […]Read On »

The Complete 83rd Annual Academy Awards Nominations

THE KING'S SPEECH movie poster | ©2010 The Weinstein Company

The 83rd Annual Academy Awards announced their nominees early this morning, and there were no huge surprises in most of the categories. The British drama THE KING’S SPEECH rules the nominations with 12, with TRUE GRIT a close second at 10. This “freshness” could actually be a boon to the Joel and Ethan Coen directed western as popularity fades on other nominees. As for the 10 movie, Best Picture category, once again, this is proving to be a very bad mistake. In attempt to be hip and get nominations for more crowd-pleasing films, this thinking has predominantly back-fired with only […]Read On »

The Complete List of the 2011 Golden Globe Awards

THE SOCIAL NETWORK movie poster | © 2010 Sony Pictures

If you didn’t watch last night’s 2011 Golden Globe Awards, you probably missed one of the most uncomfortably bizarre telecasts in Globe history. Host Ricky Gervais skewered the Hollywood elite in ways that clearly made everyone nervous (and a little miffed) in the room. Of course, it was fun and unpredictable, which is why the Globes are inherently more entertainment than the more buttoned down Oscar telecast which arrives a month later, but don’t expect Gervais to be asked back for a third time next year. As for the winners, there were a few surprises (THE KING’S SPEECH took home […]Read On »

CD Review: TRON:LEGACY original soundtrack

Tron Legacy Soundtrack | ©2010 Walt Disney Records

It’s a cold, dark and mesmerizing world 28 years later on the game grid, so don’t expect any of the playfully lush themes that Wendy Carlos gave you geeks the first time out- unless you’re counting Jeff Bridges’ brief A Capella improv at the start of LEGACY. What you will get from electronica superstars-turned-masked composers Daft Punk is an icily epic sound that brilliantly matches the new, austerely Kubrickian imagery on thrilling display, while also delivering on the whiz-bang action pitched towards a young audience whose listening tastes have significantly evolved since the days of 8-bit Atari music- not that […]Read On »

The X List: Assignment X’s Best of 2010 – Movies

TRUE GRIT poster | ©2010 Paramount Pictures

The best films of 2010, in the opinion of this reviewer (who still has to catch up with THE FIGHTER, WINTER’S BONE and several other acclaimed releases): THE SOCIAL NETWORK Normally, people working with computers is one of the most boring things that can be put on screen. Director David Fincher, writer Aaron Sorkin and an across-the-board brilliant cast headed up by Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake leave the computers in the background and illustrate the dynamics of friendship and ambition in a way that is remarkably compelling and universal. The fact that the film is about the […]Read On »

Movie Review: THE SOCIAL NETWORK

THE SOCIAL NETWORK movie poster | © 2010 Sony Pictures

Rating: R Stars: Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer, Joseph Mazzello, Max Minghella Writer: Aaron Sorkin, based on the book THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES by Ben Mezrich Director: David Fincher Distributor: Columbia Pictures Release Date: October 1st, 2010 There is a lot of controversy surrounding the accuracy of the storytelling in THE SOCIAL NETWORK. Based loosely on Ben Mezrich’s nonfiction tome THE ACCIDENTAL BILLIONAIRES about the origins of the social networking site Facebook, THE SOCIAL NETWORK has been accused of playing with the facts. This probably doesn’t matter unless one is writing a thesis about the real origins of […]Read On »
