David Titcher created TNT’s THE LIBRARIAN franchise, which led to that network’s current series THE LIBRARIANS. Now Titcher has brought his love for mixing historical fact and supernatural possibility to HOUDINI & DOYLE, on Fox Network Mondays at 9 PM . Set in 1901 London and based on the fact that famed American escape artist Harry Houdini and Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle were in reality friends with one another for a time, HOUDINI & DOYLE brings the two men together with fictional police constable Adelaide Stratton to solve crimes that other authorities are eager to bring to […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 Finale – “Mutiny”/”Eight Hours”

Connor Jessup and Noah Wyle in FALLING SKIES - Season 1 - "Eight Hours" | ©2011 TNT/Ken Woroner

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Carter Writers: Joe Weisberg (“Mutiny”)/Mark Verheiden (“Eight Hours”) Directors: Holly Dale (“Mutiny”)/Greg Beeman (“Eight Hours”)August 7, 2011 After a strong start, a soft middle and a very cool homestretch, FALLING SKIES has proven to be the thinking man’s science-fiction TV series. It’s more about the strategy of combat and little victories and less about full-out weekly alien/human war. After all, the series began AFTER the aliens had already wiped out most of earth with only a small […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 – “Sanctuary Part 1”

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Joel Anderson Thompson Director: Sergio Mimica Gezzan Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: July 17, 2011 It looks like the first of an actual two-parter has finally jostled FALLING SKIES from its free-fall the last couple of weeks. After some pretty rote and by-the-numbers storytelling, “Sanctuary Part 1” actually shakes the show up a bit and does some interesting things that lead to a somewhat surprise ending. The episode gets started with the arrival […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 – “Silent Kill”

Sarah Carter in FALLING SKIES - Season 1 - "Silent Kill" | ©2011 TNT/Ken Woroner

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Joe Weisberg Director: Fred Toye Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: July 10, 2011 In another major mis-step for the promising series FALLING SKIES, “Silent Kill” once again relies on the series standard formula of a bunch of world-weary dialogue at the beginning of the episode (usually about surviving), a dangerous mission, and a coda that offers hope. Of course, this formula, five episodes in, is wearing considerably thin. It also doesn’t help that […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 – “Grace”

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Melinda Hsu Taylor Director: Fred Toye Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: July 3, 2011 Okay, so three episodes is the limit for me on how a new series can take a limited story structure and milk it until it’s unbearable. FALLING SKIES has finally exceeded my limit. With “Grace” we’re stuck with another episode where Tom Mason (Noah Wyle) has to go on some sort of mission, avoid Skitters (the aliens), deal with […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 – “Prisoner of War”

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Fred Goland Director: Greg Beeman Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: June 26, 2011 The big question I found myself thinking while watching the third episode of FALLING SKIES – “Prisoner of War” is “why I’m increasingly getting sucked into the storytelling even though there’s a been there/done that feeling to this alien invasion series?” With V, it was all about a bunch of set-up and anticipation and little pay-off. With the movie […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 premiere – “The Armory”

Stars: Noah Wyle, Moon Bloodgood, Will Patton, Drew Roy, Maxim Knight, Connor Jessup, Sechelle Gabriel, Mpho Koaho, Peter Shinkoda, Colin Cunningham and Sarah Sanguin Carter Writer: Graham Yost Director: Greg Beeman Network: TNT, Sunday nights Original Telecast: June 19, 2011 The second part of the two-part FALLING SKIES series premiere kicks into gear with “The Armory”, a solid episode that I would say is even better than the first hour. With a lot of the exposition out of the way, the show now gets into a groove showing the pitfalls and dangers about living with an alien overlord over your […]Read On »

TV Review: FALLING SKIES – Season 1 premiere – “Live and Learn”

What else can be added, that we haven’t already seen done before – and better? Still, the new TNT series FALLING SKIES hopes to stake out its own special place in […]Read On »

Noah Wyle in FALLING SKIES - Season 1 | ©2011 TNT/James White

In TNT’s new science-fiction series FALLING SKIES, premiering this Sunday, Earth has been invaded by a heavily-armed, extremely hostile species of extraterrestrials colloquially called Skitters. The show reunites Wyle with producer Steven Spielberg, who also one of the executive producers on ER, where Wyle spent fifteen years playing Dr. John Carter.
