In STAR-CROSSED, on the CW Mondays at 8 PM, it’s been ten years since the Atrians, an alien race, landed on Earth. They were at first quarantined, but now humans are tentatively allowing them to integrate on a limited basis. Nine Atrian teens are attending a human high school. Atrian youth Roman (Matt Lanter) and human adolescent Emery (Aimee Teagarden), who originally met under dramatic circumstances as children, find themselves drawn together, despite a lot of pressure from both peers and their elders. STAR-CROSSED series creator Meredith Averill (whose previous writer and/or producer credits include THE GOOD WIFE, LIFE ON …Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 9 – “The Purge”

Dean (Jensen Ackles) goes undercover at a fat farm to find a killer on SUPERNATURAL "The Purge" | © 2014 Cate Cameron/The CW

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Annabelle Acosta, Corey Sevier, Joseph Julian Soria Writers: Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder, series created by Eric Kripke Director: Phil Sgriccia Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: February 4, 2014 SUPERNATURAL likes to reference movies in its episode titles, but the moderately gross opening sequence of “The Purge” makes us worry for a little while that the whole thing is going to involve victims vomiting before they perish. Turns out this is just the writers playing into the pun and there’s no more reverse peristalsis in “The Purge,” though the episode does …Read On »

Jensen Ackles as Dean on SUPERNATURAL | © 2014 Katie Yu/The CW

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, DJ Qualls, Sarah Smyth, Tom Butler, Eve Gordon Writer: Adam Glass, series created by Eric Kripke Director: John F. Showalter Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: January 28, 2014 There’s been a lot going on this season of SUPERNATURAL, what with Sam (Jared Padalecki) being possessed by and then exorcised of a homicidal angel, Dean (Jensen Ackles) acquiring the Mark of Cain, Castiel regaining his wings, Crowley fighting to remain King of Hell and poor Kevin being murdered. However, it has occurred to us and the Winchesters to wonder what the heck has happened to erstwhile buddy Garth …Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 9 – “First Born”

Tim Omundson as Cain in SUPERNATURAL "First Born" | © 2014 The CW/Diyah Pera

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark A. Sheppard, Timothy Omundson, Rachel Hayward Writer: Robbie Thompson, series created by Eric Kripke Director: John Badham Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: January 21, 2014 Directed by John Badham – yes, the helmer of the Frank Langella DRACULA, SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER and WARGAMES, among other credits – the SUPERNATURAL episode “First Born” comes up with a surprising yet logical (within the context of the show) bit of mythology, while working buddy comedy from two separate angles. While Dean (Jensen Ackles) is out on the road hunting Gadriel, he …Read On »

Exclusive Interview: REIGN star Torrance Coombs chats about the CW freshman series

Torrance Coombs as Bash in REIGN | © 2014 Bernard Walsh/The CW

In the CW’s freshman series Reign, Thursdays at 8 PM, we are in sixteenth-century France. Fifteen-year-old Mary (Adelaide Kane), Queen of Scots, is here to wait for her arranged marriage to the French crown Prince, Francis II (Toby Regbo). Francis’ mother Queen Catherine (Megan Follows) is averse to the match, largely because court prophet Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland) has warned that Mary will be the cause of Francis’ death. There’s also the matter of Mary’s increasing romantic interest in Francis’ half-brother, Sebastian, better known as Bash, played by Torrance Coombs, who was born to the king’s mistress. The difference between Francis …Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 9 – “Road Trip”

Mark A. Sheppard guest stars as Crowley on SUPERNATURAL "Road Trip" | © 2014 Jack Rowand/The CW

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Mark A. Sheppard, Curtis Armstrong, Alaina Huffman, Tahmoh Penikett Writer: Andrew Dabb, series created by Eric Kripke Director: Robert Singer Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: January 14, 2014 “Road Trip” is the best kind of humorous SUPERNATURAL episode. It’s not constructed as a joke-fest, but rather has a setup that allows the laughs to come organically out of the characters – even though Dean (Jensen Ackles) hardly feels like laughing at the outset. Poor Dean. The angel Gadreel has hijacked Sam’s (Jared Padalecki) physical form and used it to …Read On »

Interview: SUPERNATURAL guest star Richard Speight Jr. is a trickster and more

Richard Speight, Jr. as Gabriel in SUPERNATURAL - "Hammer of the Gods" | ©2010 The CW/Michael Courtney

Richard Speight Jr. is known to a whole bunch of different viewers for his work on a wide variety of projects. Fans of HBO’s 2001 miniseries BAND OF BROTHERS recognize the Tennessee-born actor as Sgt. Warren “Skip” Muck. Those familiar with the series THE AGENCY remember Speight as Lex. On the near-future post-apocalyptic JERICHO, Speight played Bill, and on JUSTIFIED, he’s recurred as not-very-bright crook Jed Berwind. Speight’s role over four episodes of SUPERNATURAL – currently in its ninth season on the CW, Tuesdays at 9 PM - is notable, for a number of reasons, one being that he played three …Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 9 – “Holy Terror”

Jared Padalecki in SUPERNATURAL - Season 9 - "Holy Terror" | ©2013 The CW/Katie Yu

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins, Curtis Armstrong, Stephen Monroe Taylor Writers: Eugenie Leming-Ross & Brad Buckner, series created by Eric Kripke Director: Thomas J. Wright Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: December 3, 2013 The Season 9 arc of SUPERNATURAL takes a great leap forward with “Holy Terror.” By the episode’s end, we have lost one major character, learned that another is not who he seems, someone else is transformed and poor Dean (Jensen Ackles) ends up in the metaphorical creek without a paddle or even a boat. Factions of angels are slaughtering each other. …Read On »

TV Review: SUPERNATURAL – Season 9 – “Rock and a Hard Place”

Jensen Ackles in SUPERNATURAL - Season 9 - "Bad Boys" | ©2013 The CW/Liane Hentscher

Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Kim Rhodes, Lindy Booth, Susie Abremeit Writer: Jenny Klein, series created by Eric Kripke Director: John MacCarthy Network: The CW, Tuesdays @ 9 PM Original Airdate: November 26, 2013 Now and then, in its TV-14 way, SUPERNATURAL likes to get its porn on (one could call it porn parody, but that’s redundant). There are jokes aplenty, the odd magazine and of course the message/clip that the Angel Gabriel left for the Winchesters in “Hammer of the Gods.” In “Rock and a Hard Place,” Dean (Jensen Ackles) himself gets in on the action, and though the …Read On »

Sonny (Blake Gibbons), who still runs the place, phones “D-Dog,” as he calls Dean, because he’s got an inexplicable death on …Read On »
