Exclusive Interview: Alfred Molina chats about MONDAY MORNINGS

In MONDAY MORNINGS, TNT Mondays at 10 PM, Alfred Molina’s character plays Dr. Harding Hooten, who is in charge of the weekly Mortality and Morbidity meetings, where the hows and whys of patient deaths are discussed. The series has been adapted by David E. Kelley from Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s book, with both men producing.

Molina has been a TV series regular before, most recently in LAW & ORDER: LOS ANGELES. He’s also known for multiple feature film appearances, including Satipo in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and Dr. Otto Octavius in SPIDER-MAN 2. He’s been on Broadway three times, earning a Tony nomination for each role, and has done a great deal of stage in his native England.

At the Television Critics Association press tour, Molina takes some time to talk about playing Dr. Hooten

ASSIGNMENT X: Were you particularly looking to do something that was made in L.A.?

MOLINA: Yeah, well, I live here, and it’s nice to be able to work at home. And I’ve reached an age where I’ve spent thirty years of my working life living out of a suitcase, going on location or on tour, and now the idea of a job where I can actually go home and have dinner with my wife is actually very pleasant.

AX: Is there anything different about playing somebody who’s in charge of everybody else, versus somebody who’s part of the crew?

MOLINA: No, not really. I mean, whatever character you’re playing, there’s – how shall I put it – a certain responsibility about that role. The fact that he’s the boss is just part of who he is, so you just approach it with as open a mind as possible and just get on with it.

AX: Does Harding have any empathy for the mistakes these doctors who are under him are making?

MOLINA: Oh, very much so. I think the fact that he is so demanding of them proves that he’s empathetic towards them – he wants them to do well. He wants his team to be the best there is. And so part of that is to call them on their mistakes and learn from them. And like a lot of people in charge of important departments, his job isn’t to be everyone’s friend, his job is to be the best boss he can be and to get the best out of the people that are working under him, and I think that’s really what his focus is.

AX: Do we ever see him outside the hospital – do we see his personal life?

MOLINA: We haven’t seen him yet, but we’ve seen the impact of the personal lives of some of the other characters, so if we go to a second season, that may well be a development. We know he’s married, because there’s one episode where he’s dressing down a doctor for a mistake he made when he refers to his wife. So we know he’s married, but we haven’t seen Harding in any social or personal context yet outside of the hospital.

AX: Had you worked with MONDAY MORNINGS creator David E. Kelley before?

MOLINA: Yes, I did three episodes of the last season of HARRY’S LAW, and David and I have known each other a few years. I can’t remember exactly when, but about maybe six, seven years ago, he got in touch with me with a view to talking about a pilot that he was developing at the time. But that I think was a police show – it was a cop show, and the idea was two detectives, a man and a woman, who are not married or involved in any way with each other, apart from just being working partners, but whose relationship is like a dysfunctional marriage. And it struck me as quite an interesting idea, so we had a couple of meetings about that. That never worked out, so when I got the call to come and do HARRY’S LAW, I was very pleased. We didn’t even talk about this then. David came up to me at one point and said, “Are you enjoying working in television?” and I said, “Yes, very much so.” The next thing I know, this arrives, so I was ready for it.

AX: Have you played doctors before?

MOLINA: Not in the States. I did a movie where I played a psychiatrist and that’s about it. I’ve never played a medical doctor.

AX: So were you part of the group that was instructed by executive producer Dr. Sanjay Gupta on how to sew cow brains back together?

MOLINA: Oh, yeah. Well, my character isn’t involved in too many medical procedures. I think you only see Harding twice getting scrubbed up for a procedure, but I was there, and in fact, I was invited to go and see a brain operation, but I’m so queasy, I said, “Don’t worry, I can make it up. That’s my job – I can imagine.”

AX: Is there any difference between working for TNT and a broadcast network?

MOLINA: Not really. I mean, the coal face is the coal face. I’m sure there are differences in terms of the administration and behind the scenes stuff, but that doesn’t really affect us at all.

AX: You toured as Yvan in Yasmina Reza’s ART a number of years ago at the Hartford in Los Angeles. You had a monologue that literally stopped the show for several minutes.

MOLINA: Every actor that played that part, the same thing happened. It was quite amazing. It was a wonderful moment in the theatre.

AX: What would you most like people to know about MONDAY MORNINGS?

MOLINA: It’s a good show, it’s an interesting show, it’s a challenging show, it’s an intelligent show. That’s what I’d like them to know.

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 16 – “Obama Wins!” – Season Finale

As SOUTH PARK winds down Season 16, the series hits a homerun with its season finale “Obama Wins!”

Since this episode was pretty much done before the outcome of the Presidential election was announced, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone could have been tempting fate with its proclamation and storyline of an Obama win or would have had to do an “alternate ending” of some sort if the Presidential election went in Mitt Romney’s direction.

Regardless, “Obama Wins!” is one of the funniest episodes of Season 16 and definitely one of the more clever episodes.

Cartman is at the center which finds him stealing voter ballots across the country on Election Day. His goal – to ensure Obama wins. What we learn though is the Chinese made a pact with Cartman to steal the Mitt Romney ballots for Obama.

Why? Well, ask Morgan Freeman, who pops up to explain the complicated plot that involves the Chinese being promised the STAR WARS franchise from Obama in exchange for him winning the election. The Chinese are terrified at what the Walt Disney Company will do with the STAR WARS franchise and want it all for their own.

Toss in foul-mouthed Mickey Mouse, a Hummer car lot, Cartman on a Tauntaun and you’ve got some great gags and very funny scenarios. Everything builds with tons of pay-off with the jokes. I also love that they tackled the STAR WARS franchise being sold to Disney. It’s something that’s weighed heavily on us geeks for the last week and they found a great way to tie it into the Presidential election.

As critical as I’ve been this last half of the season of SOUTH PARK, I still have to admit I love everything about the show – the good and the bad. It’s always refreshing, always original and even when it fails, it’s gar more interesting than many other shows that should have been put out to pasture long ago.

It’s going to be a very long winter, but I’m thrilled SOUTH PARK left the season on a high note.

After two strong weeks, SOUTH PARK heads back into iffy territory with “A Scause for Applause”, a failed attempt at dealing with the disgrace of Lance Armstrong for using performance enhancing drugs.

In the SOUTH PARK version, everyone wearing “What Would Jesus Do” bracelets decides to cut them off when it’s discovered that Jesus used performance enhancement drugs to perform his miracles.

This leads to a dilemma with Stan, who decides he’s not going to cut off his bracelet like everyone else – resulting in everyone looking up to Stan. Then Stan falls from grace and the cycle continues.

Jesus shows up too, bummed out that he’s lost his credibility and both he and Stan try to find a way to get back into the good graces of society.

There are some funny gags throughout, especially when SOUTH PARK uses Dr. Seuss and his unique storytelling to hit home the episode’s theme. However, “A Scause for Applause” tackles familiar comedic targets that Trey Parker and Matt Stone have mined with much better results in so many episodes. It’s all just lukewarm and not very clever.

I have to admit, even though this episode didn’t work for me, I’m enjoying that more attention being paid to characters other than Cartman (last season was very Cartman heavy). And seeing Stan end up in a dilemma is always fun.

Still “A Scause of Applause” feels like one of those episodes that sounded great in theory and slowly fell apart before they could find a way to truly make it work. It’s the quandary the show faces when it tries to write, animate and produce an episode in seven days.

Next week is the season finale and I can’t wait to see whether this season ends on a high or low note (but I’m hoping they go out with a big bang).

TV Review: SOUTH PARK – Season 16 – “A Nightmare on FaceTime”

It’s been some time since SOUTH PARK has done a Halloween episode, but it was worth the wait as Trey Parker and Matt Stone come up with a new classic with “A Nightmare on Facetime.”

Sending up THE SHINING, Blockbuster Video’s financial woes, The Avengers and our obsession with Apple products, there’s enough good will here to provide ample laughs and a great story to boot.

When Stan’s dad Randy comes home and says the family is going to be rich because he just bought a business for $10,000, their hopes are dashed when they discover that business is a Blockbuster Video store. Stan reminds his dad people get movies now through Netflix, Redbox and streaming, not renting from Blockbuster, but stubborn Randy is steadfast and convinced it’s a great investment.

That is, until no one shows up to rent movies. The Blockbuster Video is reminiscent of the Overlook Hotel from THE SHINING and the episode plays up all the expected benchmarks of that great horror film (well, everything except for the “Here’s Johnny” line).

As Randy goes all Jack Nicholson, he also prevents Stan from going trick or treating with his friends and complicating their attempt at being the Avengers. Kyle comes up with a great idea though – Stan can use his iPad to participate through FaceTime. By using Kyle’s iPad for Stan to see – they’re all set.

The gags involving everyone treating the iPad version of Stan as Captain America is hilarious. And when some Redbox thieves come after them, they torture the Stan/iPad in addition to dumping it on the side of the road. Randy also becomes Gangnamstein at some point and the result is classic SOUTH PARK.

There’s even a Monster Mash costume party and a couple of funny digs at that popular song “Gangnam Style.”

The unfortunate truism of the episode though is the acknowledgement that Blockbuster Video has, sadly become about as vacant as a haunted house. It’s a great commentary on a lost commercial enterprise and all the jokes that take jabs at it are very funny.

Like last week’s “Going Native,” this episode finds SOUTH PARK also taking a step back and create a simple, yet effective little story. There isn’t anything overtly political on display and the story isn’t super complicated and ridiculous that it falls apart. “A Nightmare on FaceTime” is simple and sweet – and will likely become a perfect annual Halloween mainstay for years to come.

Often times SOUTH PARK tries so hard to be topical and “parody” things all the time, that you begin to expect parodies even when there is none. And sometimes, when they are sending something up – it can get quite obscure and then you feel like a complete idiot for not even getting the point of the episode.

“Go Native” is one of those episode that could go either way. Is it a standalone silly episode, or is it trying to say something about the ABC series LAST RESORT or Ben Affleck and his charmed life. Either way, it’s actually quite clever and fun, though not particularly hilarious (like most of the latter part of Season 16). Yet, it is so different and it focuses on the under-utilized Kenny and Butters that it makes it fun just to see the two of them pair up and go on an adventure.

The hook for the episode is Butters anger finally gets the best of him, and then his parents unload the big bomb – he was born in Hawaii and he must now go through a ceremony in Hawaii to curb his anger.

Kenny tags along, and there becomes a huge war between the “natives” of Hawaii (which are really just tourists that have decided to live there part of the time) and the actual tourists. U.S. military action intervenes. Throw in Butters anger toward Affleck because he hates that he has everything including Jennifer Lopez (only realizing at the end that he’s now married to Jennifer Garner, which changes everything) and you have a pretty solid episode.

This kind of silliness is what SOUTH PARK does best and it includes Kenny’s own journey in becoming a native too – not to mention meeting fat, ghost Elvis (a very funny bit).

Meanwhile, Butters also takes down a cruise ship by a precision hit of a gold ball. One of the best sight gags all season.

Sometime SOUTH PARK just needs to be silly and that’s all it needs and “Going Native” is really simple as it goes for some basic, and quite funny gags I also think one of the reasons why I enjoyed this episode more than “Sarcastaball” and last week’s dreadful “Insecurity” is it wasn’t’t a Cartman-centric episode.

Next week is the first SOUTH PARK Halloween episode in some time – can’t wait to see what they have up their sleeve next.

Sadly SOUTH PARK seems to be struggling during the latter half of Season 16. Joining the awful “Sarastaball” is the latest episode “Insecurity” – a painfully unfunny exercise in randomness.

I sense Trey Parker and Matt Stone are trying for some commentary on how fearful the nation has become since the Colorado shootings at THE DARK KNIGHT RISES screening, but it just doesn’t really work.

Things kick off when Ike sees a UPS man having sex with his mom (what he doesn’t know is his dad playing dress up). When Stan ‘s dad overhears Kyle talking about this, he hooks up with other dads who are convinced the UPS man is having sex with their wives too. So they dress up as Bane from THE DARK KNIGHT RISES are start to harass and beat the UPS man up.

Another throughline includes a security firm that you hire to protect you. If there’s a problem, they call you and send the police over with blankets and cocoa. This goes horrible wrong.

It’s all rather scattershot, with a few amusing asides, but it just doesn’t add up to a complete whole. The jokes are absent and it just feels like one of those episodes that started off with noble ambitions and then slowly got away from them as they tried to crank it out in their seven day time crunch.

SOUTH PARK always has its ups and downs and I thought last week’s “Raising the Bar” was brilliant, unfortunately, if you’re going to be a fan of this show, you have to brave the hits with the misses. Let’s pray “Insecurity” and “Sarcastaball” are the rare misses for a much better rest of the season.

Thank you SOUTH PARK. After an awful return for the second half of Season 16 last week with “Sarcastaball,” the series is back on track with a hilarious and very meta episode called “Raising the Bar.”

The episode concerns itself with society lowering the bar and standards when it comes to overweight people and watching trashy shows like HERE COMES HONEY BOO BOO.

When Cartman accepts he’s fat, he loves that he can now ride around on his own motorized scooter – and take advantage of all the perks that come with it. When Token Black and Kyle decide to do a documentary on him, Token turns it into another standard reality series where you’re laughing at the subject, not with them.

Meanwhile, James Cameron is doing another one of his monumental deep-sea dives to figure out why the bar was lowered.

“Raising the Bar” is a chaotic and very funny episode. When the characters talk about lowering the bar, creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone are even hinting (through their characters) that maybe they were responsible for lowering the bar as well.

The Honey Boo Boo jokes are actually quite funny, especially when she needs to get a heart transplant and they do a transplant, but with a pig heart.

It’s nuts, but dead on. This is SOUTH PARK as we know and love it. And with the nod to James Cameron’s fascination with deep sea diving and doing things most directors would never even attempt makes this episode a new classic in the making. Has the bar been raised after this, probably not, but I love that “Raising the Bar” doesn’t answer that question, it just does what it does best – make fun of the bar itself.

SOUTH PARK is back for the second half of Season 16, but sadly “Sarcastaball” is one of the weakest episodes of the season by far.

Taking on the current topical subject of the NFL and the replacement referees that have been destroying the game, SOUTH PARK touches on things that have been mined to far better effect in other episodes and other seasons.

When Randy finds out South Park Elementary is making school football “too safe”, he gets all sarcastic and starts suggesting other things to make the game safer – like the boys wearing bras, wearing tin foil hats on their heads (because it’s the future) and using a balloon instead of a football.

It’s an absolutely ridiculous laundry list, but the school takes it seriously and “Sarcastaball” is born. Everything Randy does or says becomes a sarcastic diatribe and he agrees to coach the school’s Sarcastaball team. In fact, the NFL adopts the sport too and he becomes the coach for a major league Sarcastaball team as well.

Most of this stuff would have been better off a B story in a much funnier episode, but the gags for this are dragged out. Maybe if you’re into the NFL, you’ll get more of the inside jokes, but I personally found it dull and uninteresting.

The episode does push boundaries a bit when Butters starts talking about the gooey goodness inside of him. Basically, at night, after he dreams of hot ladies, he wakes up with a special fluid under the sheets that he bottles up. It’s his special gooey goodness. It’s what makes him essentially good – and it becomes marketed as a “goodness” booster drink without anyone realizing it’s his semen.

It’s pretty sick, but it’s the funniest and most disgusting part of a rather bland episode.

As is the case with any run of SOUTH PARK, the episodes tend to be hit and miss. However, this being the first show back, you kind of expect more from creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. I’m confident they’ll get their mojo back quickly, but after waiting all summer for a new SOUTH PARK, it’s kind of sucky to come back and watch them fumble the ball like this (bad pun intended).

The mid-season finale of SOUTH PARK is here, and while last year set the bar high for a mid-season closer (the brilliant “You’re Getting Old”), this year ends on a soft note with an okay, but unspectacular Cartman-centric episode “Cartman Finds Love.”

First off, when you hear the title, you think, finally, someone is going to tame Cartman – but that’s not the case. It’s just another episode where Cartman falls in love with himself.

When the new black girl Nichole arrives in town, Cartman sees this as a perfect opportunity to chancel his inner Cupid (he calls it Cupid Me) and set Nichole up with Token.

The issue focuses on the idea that just because there are two black kids in town, they shouldn’t necessarily end up together, because, well, that would be racist. Some nice laughs, but it’s material the show has mined before and with far better results.

Throw in Kyle interested in Nichole – but thwarted by Cartman’s Cupid Me by revealing that he and Kyle are secretly gay, and you have a pretty straight-forward episode.

The laughs are low this time out – more amusing, than laugh-out-loud funny, but the episode does get points for the hilarious Cupid Me antics. When Cartman’s matchmaking goes awry, he takes a bat to Cupid Me and then keeps him, bloodied and dead in a shoebox in his closet.

Classic.

So far Season 16 has been solid. The uneven episodes are not nearly as bad as Season 15’s worst and breaking out of the mold of standard storytelling has really reinvigorated Season 16.

While we don’t end on a cliffhanger, “Cartman Finds Love” is a fine episode. It would have been better if “I Never Should Have Went Ziplining” concluded the midseason, but I’m not the one trying to create these shows is six days.

SOUTH PARK has been so weird and crazy during Season 16, it’s hard what to make of it week to week. Sometimes it’s really funny, other times it’s been getting really weird. And this week, it goes off-the-rails weird – so much so that even though it wasn’t that funny, it still was more interesting than just about anything else on TV this week.

“I Should Have Never Gone Ziplining” is set up like one of those reality shows about horrible things happening to good people. It’s done in almost faux documentary style and features Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny deciding to go zip-lining because it sounds fun.

However, it turns out to be their worst nightmare. No, they don’t end up stranded and eating each other for survival. Nothing nightmarish mauls them. No, it’s just plain boring. And the people that are part of the “zip lining tour” are boring.

The boys get so bored, they end up taking a horse ride back down the mountain that ends up even more boring and then on a boat that goes super slow.

This is where the episode gets inspired though – scenes are re-enacted from their boat ride and it’s done in live action. If anyone wondered what a live action SOUTH PARK movie or TV show featuring Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny might look like – this is it. It’s quite ridiculous, but it ultimately is quite satisfying in how over-the-top it ends up.

It even concludes with a “you killed Kenny moment.” But it’s Kenny, dying of boredom.

“I Should Have Never Gone Ziplining” is another experimental episode for creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone. It works half of the time and excels with the live action elements at the end – and of course Mr. Hankey saving the day.

Hopefully this episode will put the death knell on Paramount Pictures ever trying to do SOUTH PARK as a live action feature. The show works perfectly in animation, and even though the live action bits are cool, it’s clear Parker and Stone want people to remember why they animate their series and why it’s the only way it should be made.

One more episode until the fall – can’t wait to see what they come up with next week for the midseason finale.
