POP SHOW – Episode 39: Super Bowl and The Expanse

POP SHOW PODCAST | © 2016 AssignmentX

Welcome to another episode of the POP SHOW PODCAST starring Anthony C. Ferrante. It was the Super Bowl so we had to talk about the game, the Halftime Show, the ads and more. Anthony joins us briefly to talk about the fact he will be directly the fifth installment of the SHARKNADO franchise, dubbed for now SHARKNADO 5. Sonia Mansfield, Christopher Allen Smith and myself, Peter Brown, also end up chatting about the new season of THE EXPANSE and the opening episode of 24: LEGACY, that premiered after the Super Bowl. We also get around to talking about the Ben […]Read On »

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: April 18, 2012 After American had a brain fart last week or it was all rigged for ratings on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL, we get a double dose of karaoke with each singer performing twice. It’s fitting then that two will go home this week without any saves from the judges. That’s because the judges saved Jessica Sanchez from elimination last week in case you forgot after she placed inexplicably last in votes. This week they are […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL Season 11 recap: Colton Dixon Wows, Phillip Phillips Mixes it Up Nicely

Colton Dixon on AMERICAN IDOL- Season 11 - "The Top 7 Perform" | ©2012 Fox/Michael Becker

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: April 4, 2012 How do you find the strength to carry on when your friends leave on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL? That was the sanctimonious and oddly-phrased question put before us at the beginning of this episode of IDOL. Wait a minute, this is a freaking reality show, right? Aren’t these fools competing against one another? Shouldn’t they be freaking damn happy it ain’t them? I know Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanaugh are thinking it despite how […]Read On »

TV Review: AMERICAN IDOL – Season 11 – “Auditions No. 4: Aspen”

Magic Cyclops in AMERICAN IDOL - Season 11 - "Auditions 4 - Aspen" | ©2012 Fox/Michael Becker

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson, Steven Tyler Network: Fox, Airs @ 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays Original Telecast: Jan. 25, 2012 So here we are again for yet another round of the same ole, same ole on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL, coming from lovely Aspen, for what I believe the first time in the show’s history. First the good news, IDOL was only one hour tonight instead of the usual two. The bad news is that there was literally nothing different from the other three audition episodes other than the people singing (and for the […]Read On »

Music Review: The 10 Best Songs of 2011 (Some Brown, a little Perry, People and a whole lot to Gaga over)

Lady Gaga performs on the AMERICAN IDOL Season 10 finale | ©2011 Fox/Michael Becker

It was a pretty eclectic year in music, and that’s reflected with the best songs of 2011. A little Adele, a bit of Kanye and some more than welcome Katy Perry. And what would a year be without a song to go Gaga over. So here’s the ten best songs of 2011. 1. Adele – “Rolling in the Deep” Undeniably powerful, soulful and sincere. Sometimes, with the right lyrics and right vocals, a song just hits home. Read the lyrics if you must, or to feel it’s true impact, simply sing at the top of your lungs, “we could have […]Read On »

CD Review: Lady Gaga – BORN THIS WAY

Lady Gaga - BORN THIS WAY | ©2011 Interscope Records

Distributor: Interscope Suggested Retail Price: $12.99 You have to hand it to Lady Gaga. She loves to let her freak flag fly, and she’s done such an amazing job of cultivating this performance-art persona, that she’s become more famous for what she wears, rather than what she’s actually singing. That of course is the big dichotomy her career is facing. She’s clearly pushed the envelope as far as she can with her costumes, and now, she really needs to start bringing the attention back to the fact that she’s not that bad a singer and a pretty accomplished songwriter (even […]Read On »

AMERICAN IDOL Season 10 recap: Another SHOCKER as James Durbin goes home

James Durbin eliminated on AMERICAN IDOL - Season 10 - The Final Four | ©2011 Fox/Michael Becker

Cast: Ryan Seacrest, Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler, Randy Jackson Network: Fox, airs Wednesdays and Thursdays Original Telecast: May 12, 2011 Well, the contest is anyone’s ball game after losing James Durbin on the world’s greatest karaoke competition, AMERICAN IDOL. This was a complete shock. James has never been in the bottom at all. He was the only one to never be in the bottom. Yet, he’s gone. I figured that James was a lock for the finals. He was and is such a good singer. He rocked the house every single time he was on stage. I can’t believe that […]Read On »

Song Reviews: AMERICAN IDOL – TOP 4 SEASON 10 album

AMERICAN IDOL: The Final 4: Haley Reinhart, Scotty McCreery, James Durbin and Lauren Alaina | ©2011 Fox/Michael Becker

After last night’s strange episode of AMERICAN IDOL – Season 10, where the Top 4 contestants sang two songs apiece (one that inspires, the other from the Jerry Leiber/Mike Stoller songbook), it was clear the judges are still all over the map when it comes to criticism and what an IDOL should exactly be (okay, one map, everyone is great EXCEPT Haley). While James Durbin, Lauren Alaina and Scotty McCreery have gotten pretty much a free ride to the Top 4 with nary a critique (especially when they blow hard), Haley Reinhart has had to claw her way into her […]Read On »
