By the time we meet, or rather are reacquainted with, Lena/Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), she seems to have already racked up a body count. For those unfamiliar with “Esther,” she is the title character in 2009’s ORPHAN. The new ORPHAN: FIRST KILL is a prequel to that. ORPHAN: FIRST KILL begins at […]Read On »

As most people know by now, Showtime’s series DEXTER is both a critical and a ratings hit, with a four consecutive Outstanding Drama Emmy nominations to its credit. Star Michael C. Hall has won a Golden Globe and been nominated for four consecutive Best Actor Emmys for his portrayal of Dexter Morgan, a seemingly mild-mannered Miami police blood splatter analyst by day and a serial killer who takes out other murders by night. Over the years, we’ve seen Dexter get married, father a son, have his wife murdered by another serial killer (John Lithgow, who won a Supporting Actor Emmy […]Read On »

Mindful of the fact that there’s probably no increasing over the stab to the heart that was the Season Four finale, the DEXTER team go in another direction as they conclude Season Five on a bittersweet note that feels just right.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – “Hop a Freighter”

Michael C. Hall in DEXTER - Season 5 | © 2010 Showtime

In “Hop a Freighter,” things come to a head, with Dexter (Michael C. Hall) discovering the surveillance equipment ex-cop Liddy (Peter Weller) has planted in his apartment. Wrongly believing the spy cameras were planted by Deb’s (Jennifer Carpenter) current partner/love interest Quinn (Desmond Harrington), Dexter tries to catch him in the act. Instead, Liddy catches Dexter, but of course Liddy seriously underestimates the table-turning abilities of our guy.

Lee, David Zayas, Julia Stiles, Jonny Lee Miller, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Scott Grimes, Peter Weller, Angela Bettis Writer: Scott Reynolds Director: Keith Gordon Network: Showtime, Sunday nights Airdate: November 28, 2010 There is at least one jaw-dropper of a moment in “In the Beginning,” and it’s not the finale where Dexter (Michael C. Hall) and Lumen (Julia Stiles) finally get together and Dexter reaches the realization that he’s found someone who neither sees him as nor needs him to be a monster. It’s satisfying, but we’ve seen this coming […]Read On »

A lot of things get blown open in the latest episode of DEXTER called “Teenage Wasteland” and all of them matter. Deb (Jennifer Carpenter), confined to file room duty, finds DNA evidence that there’s more than one perpetrator in the barrel girls” case. Deb convinces a reluctant Lt. Laguerta (Lauren Velez) to reopen the case, previously considered closed. Deb is shocked when her boyfriend Quinn (Desmond Harrington) says he loves her – and shocked again when Quinn admits that he suspected Deb’s brother Dexter (Michael C. Hall) might be Trinity Killer associate Kyle Butler, though he now wants to leave it alone. Liddy (Peter Weller), the disgraced cop Quinn hired as a private investigator, doesn’t want to leave it alone, and has pictures of Dexter and Lumen (Julia Stiles) doing something late at night on Dexter’s boat with big plastic bags.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – ‘Take It!’

Desmond Harrington in DEXTER - Season 5 - "Take It!" | ©2010 Showtime/Randy Tepper

Over its five seasons, DEXTER has come close to what happens in “Take It” a few times. Dexter (Michael C. Hall) found a measure of mutual understanding with fellow killers Lila (Jaime Murray) in Season Two and Miguel (Jimmy Smits) in Season Three, but neither of them had a code and both eventually became his deadly nemeses due to their differences. Now, however, Dexter has Lumen (Julia Stiles), whose motivations are sympathetic – she feels an urgent need to avenge her rape, torture and captivity at the hands of a ring of serial killers, the kind of men who are Dexter’s natural prey.

TV Review: DEXTER – SEASON 5 – ‘Circle Us’

The DEXTER episode “Circle Us” may be a good indicator that when Dexter (Michael C. Hall) is mulling things over rather than reaching epiphanies, the episode tends to feel like its holding back, even when its action lunges forward. Such is the case here.
