In ABC’s MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, now in its second season Tuesday nights at 9, a lot has changed since the series began its first year. The show, adapted by Joss Whedon & Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen from the Marvel comics, is intimately tied in with the Marvel film universe, so when Hydra agents emerged to wreak havoc with S.H.I.E.L.D. from within during the big screen’s CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, all hell immediately also broke loose on AGENTS. In the aftermath, it turned out that team member Grant Ward (Brett Dalton) was a Hydra mole. Team chief Phil […]Read On »

Stars: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker, Bill Paxton Suggested Retail Price: $79.99 Distributor: Marvel Studios/Buena Vista Home Entertainment One of the most disappointing things Marvel has done in its bid for superhero dominance is the creation of MARVEL’S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. – an ABC TV series that should have been better than it actually was. Now it’s out on DVD and Blu-ray as THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON for the binge-viewers out there. And considering Joss Whedon, who wrote and directed THE AVENGERS, was at the helm and co-created the series with Jed […]Read On »

Chloe Bennet, J.J. Britt and Clark Gregg in MARVEL'S AGENTS OF SHIELD - Season 2 | ©2014 ABC/Kelsey McNeal

When MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, created by Joss Whedon, Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, based in the Marvel comics universe, debuted on ABC last year, we followed a team of agents led by Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg) on a series of adventures. Then the feature film CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER was released on April 4, 2014. The S.H.I.E.L.D. agency was attacked from within by the group Hydra, whose operatives turned out to have been inside S.H.I.E.L.D. since its inception in World War II. In the very next episode of AGENTS OF SHIELD, our heroes had to deal with the […]Read On »

CD Review: IN YOUR EYES soundtrack

IN YOUR EYES soundtrack | ©2014 Lakeshore Records

A guitarist and arranger for such composers as Brian Tyler and Harry Gregson-Williams, Tony Morales has been impressing with his suspenseful, action-heavy scores for THE BAG MAN and ENEMIES CLOSER, while also netting an Emmy nomination for co-scoring the hellbilly hootenany of the HATFIELDS & McCOYS along with John Debney. Perhaps that’s why Morales’ romantic score for IN YOUR EYES  sounds like it could be taking place during a Van Damme face-off, as well as a mesmerizing mind-eye bridge where boy meets girl via psychic connection. Morales’ programming chops, not to mention melodic talent, add much musical atmosphere to this […]Read On »

Alexis Denisof in FINDING CARTER - Season 1 | ©2014 MTV

In MTV’s new Tuesday night drama FINDING CARTER, the Wilson family has undergone two huge jolts. One was twelve years ago, when then-three-year-old daughter Lyndon was kidnapped. The other is in the present, when Lyndon, who has reached the age of fifteen in the identity of Carter Stevens (Kathryn Prescott), is returned to her actual parents, sister and brother. Since Carter has grown up believing the woman who raised her was her real mother, it’s quite a shock to her – and having her back is a jolt to her biological kin as well. Alexis Denisof, who plays Carter/Lyndon’s father […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: Fran Kranz on THE LORD OF CATAN – PART 1

Fran Kranz in THE LORD OF CATAN | ©2014 Stuart C. Paul

It isn’t that actor Fran Kranz only works with people he’s met on the projects he’s acted in for Joss Whedon – the TV series DOLLHOUSE and the films CABIN IN THE WOODS and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING. In the past year, Kranz has had a recurring role on DALLAS and made several features (more about them later) that have nothing to do with those connections. Then again, he does often work with his fellow DOLLHOUSE alumni. One case in point is the short film THE LORD OF CATAN, which has its Los Angeles public premiere Saturday, May 31 at […]Read On »

In Part 2 of Assignment X’s exclusive interview with J. August Richards, the actor talks more about his work on MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD (ABC, Tuesdays at 8 PM) as the character Mike Peterson/Deathlok, plus his writing/directing project THE HYPNOTIST. ASSIGNMENT X: When you were on ANGEL, the producers were worried about spoilers, but it seems you’ve achieved a whole new level of security clearance working for Marvel. What is it like dealing with that kind of secrecy? J. AUGUST RICHARDS: Having to deal with Marvel security has introduced a phrase into my vocabulary that I now overuse. For example, […]Read On »

Exclusive Interview: J. August Richards on MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD – Part 1

Viewers of ABC’s MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD, in its first season Tuesdays at 8 PM, were dealt a huge shock with the episode “Turn, Turn, Turn.” Airing just after the theatrical release of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, it dealt (like SOLDIER) with the revelation that S.H.I.E.L.D. had from its inception been infiltrated by the proto-Nazi organization HYDRA, which has now revealed itself and is wreaking havoc. This is terrible for the series regulars – team leader Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen), Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker), Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) and Skye (Chloe Bennet), who’ve […]Read On »

TV Review: MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD – Season 1 – “The Only Light in the Darkness”

Agent Ward (Brett Dalton) takes a lie detector on AGENTS OF SHIELD | © 2014 ABC/Justin Lubin

Cast: Clark Gregg, Ming-Na wen, Brett Dalton, Chloe Bennet, Elizabeth Henstridge, Iain De Caestecker Director:Vincent Misiano Network: Airs on ABC Tuesdays @ 8 p.m. Original Telecast: April 22, 2014 Well, it certainly seems that MARVEL’S AGENTS OF SHIELD has a direction now in terms of the entire mythology of the show (or at least this season) but they are dragging their heels to the finish line as it was shown in “The Light in the Darkness.” Now as cool as it is to think that this would just lead to numerous awesome stories involving the characters we have grown to […]Read On »
