Comic Book Review: ANGEL #44

Writer: David Tischman and Mariah Huehner
Penciler: Elena Casagrande
Cover Artist: Elena Casagrande
Distributor: IDW

Well Angel and most of his crew survived AFTER THE FALL, and starting with issue #18 the series was simply re-named ANGEL. That was pretty much the point I lost interest in this series. Once Joss Whedon was no longer directly involved this series because the typical bad-genre spin-off comic book that has happened a hundred times over. The stories were weak and spread out, new useless characters were brought in, then killed off, or worse off they stuck around – and then the whole series attempted to tie itself up in a neat little bow in issue #44.
The world of ANGEL at IDW ended with a big whimper instead of a bang like the alley fight in the final season of the series. The final issue is the culmination of the six part story of “The Wolf, The Ram, and The Hart”, which found Angel still trapped in the future with Illyria as his only real way home. Meanwhile back in current time Anne is giving birth to a demon baby that is killing her, and Connor, Gunn and company are locked in a life and death battle with James.

Angel is sent back to the past by Illyria and saves the day again, also in the process saving Anne and allowing her to have a normal childbirth that doesn’t kill her. Angel visits with good old Wolfram and Hart and informs them that no matter what they plan he will be there to stop them, and if he isn’t Connor will be. Then he goes wandering down an infamous alleyway and contemplates all of the people he’s lost over the years.

So the story was “Meh” as far as dynamic Angel sagas go. The most entertaining thing was Illyria and her pet critter Pancakes, and they crossed over from an Illyria mini-series. I knew from previous news items, that IDW was going to leave it Joss and Dark Horse to tell the tale bridging ANGEL and whatever the series is going to be called once it starts back up at Dark Horse Comics, but a little bit of a tie-in would have been helpful. As it stands now, ANGEL just ends and then the next time we see the character he’s involved with Twilight and is once again possessed and off his rocker.
The art was solid as always with the series, and that has been a nice constant, and the cover art is beautiful, so at least the issue is pretty to look at.

ANGEL AFTER THE FALL was such an awesome series, I honestly have no idea how they could’ve followed it up with anything that would be as good. It seemed like a peaceful transition for ANGEL and SPIKE to move back under the Dark Horse banner, so perhaps IDW just ran out of things to do with the characters. It certainly will be interesting to see what happens in between this ending and BUFFY SEASON EIGHT, and to see where Angel’s new adventures with Faith will take him.

WonderCon 2011: DOLLHOUSE comics mini-series coming in July (Exclusive)

While speaking with ASSIGNMENT X during an exclusive interview at WonderCon 2011, Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie reveals that DOLLHOUSE: EPITAPHS one shot comic book is just the beginning of the story for the company. Get ready for a five-issue mini-series with hinted plans at more if things go well.

Allie also admits that while Dark Horse was on board about doing a DOLLHOUSE comic, Allie says, they were unsure about whether creator Joss Whedon would be down for supporting it.

“Joss was unsure about doing a DOLLHOUSE comic and he came up with the EPITAPHS episodes, he said this is how we could do the comics … if we do the comics,” Allie says. “What eventually got us to do [the comic] was that Fox came to us and said they wanted to do a DVD insert and they wanted to do a comic. So Joss said, well if you do it, you can do an EPITAPHS thing. And we asked Joss if we can do more and he said ‘yes.’ So, he and put together an additional 12-pages along with Andrew Chambliss [who co-wrote the DOLLHOUSE TV series finale].”

But that’s not all as the one-shot that piggybacked on the DVD release is just the start.

“The one-shot has just come out and now we have a five-issue series coming out starting in July,” says Allie. “And rather than launching a big, huge season like with BUFFY, we are doing a five-issue series, then taking a break. And we’ve got a basic vision for what’s coming after that mini-series, but we are not going to reveal those plans at this moment.”

While we know that Whedon is going to be very hands on with the BUFFY – Season 9 comic and have a vested interest in the ANGEL AND FAITH book, what about this DOLLHOUSE mini-series?

“He is relatively hands off because Jed Whedon is handling the comic,” Allie says. “He approves what we are doing and put in some guidance but Jed and Mo [Tancharoen] were pivotal in getting the TV show up and running so they are capable with the comic.”

But Joss is not just limiting himself to writing chores since he will be directing the forthcoming THE AVENGERS movie for Marvel.

“He’s pretty hands on. We had a writer’s summit at [Joss’] house where everyone on staff and some writers from Season 8 and broke the season and came up with the basic direction of the season,” Allie says. “Outlines and scripts get run by him, he gives notes, he re-writes stuff, he’s writing parts himself. He has very specific ideas about the parts he wants to do himself. And Joss and [co-writer] Andrew [Chambliss] are working very closely together about the parts he is not writing himself.”

WonderCon 2011: ANGEL comic books will become ANGEL AND FAITH (Exclusive)

While speaking with ASSIGNMENT X during an exclusive interview at WonderCon 2011, Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie revealed some major plans in store for the ANGEL comics which are moving from IDW to the Dark Horse family.

The first of which is the name of the book, which will change to ANGEL AND FAITH focusing on the vampire and the vampire slayer.

“After the traumatic events of Season 8 , Faith sticks with Angel in order to get his act together after everything happens,” Allie says. “The two of them share the spotlight and both have their names in the titles. It will be written by Chris Gage and drawn by Rebecca Isaacs.”

While Dark Horse doesn’t plan on looking past what was done at IDW in terms of the ANGEL series, they consider it in the past.

“People are like ‘If it is ANGEL then it must be Season 6 or Season 7,’” Allie says. “We are not thinking of it so much as that but all of this takes place following Season 8 [of BUFFY]. The events of Season 8 sets both [ANGEL AND FAITH and BUFFY - SEASON 9] in motion. The stuff that happened over at IDW took place effectively before Season 8. So our comics are a direct follow up to Season 8. The IDW stuff took place prior to that.”

Defending the move, Allie says it was more about being less complicated than it was about marketing.

“If we called it ANGEL - Season 6, that would negate what IDW did,” Allie says. “And if we call it Season 7, then that retroactive say that what IDW did was Season 6. It is really complicated and confusing at once marketing BUFFY – Season 9 and ANGEL – Season fill-in-the-blanks. We are generically referring to what we are doing as Season 9 and all of these books fit together. They will have a slight cohesion, maybe more cohesion than when the two shows were on the air but not so much that Spike will be flying his bug ship back and forth from one book to another. It won’t be constant cross-over land.”

Much like BUFFY - Season 9, ANGEL AND FAITH will run over the course of 25 issues beginning at the end of August. Also much like BUFFY, ANGEL AND FAITH will feature two covers.

WonderCon 2011: The Scoop on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – Season 9 comics (Exclusive)

While speaking with ASSIGNMENT X during an exclusive interview at WonderCon 2011, Dark Horse Senior Managing Editor Scott Allie revealed some plans for the publisher’s forthcoming BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 9 comics.

After Season 8′s long and scattered production schedule amounting to 40 issues for the season, Dark Horse is planning a much scaled back comic for Season 9, but that could be they are also launching concurrently ANGEL AND FAITH – the new ANGEL series from the publishing house.

“Everyone felt that it took too long at 40 issues,” Allie says. “So this season is going to be 25 issues. Both titles [BUFFY and ANGEL AND FAITH] will be 25 issues long. There will be some concurrent mini-series that will be shorter that will go along with both series. Both will launch at the same time, both will end at the same time over the course of approximately two years.”

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 9 will launch at the beginning of September, while ANGEL AND FAITH will debut two weeks before that at the end of August.

Allie also revealed that Joss Whedon will be co-writing BUFFY along with DOLLHOUSE and THE VAMPIRE DIARIES TV writer Andrew Chambliss. Whedon will be writing the first issue of Season 9.

“[Joss] said he really wanted to be involved,” Allie said. “So he has been making the time. He is writing the first issue of BUFFY, he’ll be co-writing the other issues, he’ll be editing the scripts. Pretty much the same way he did in Season 8.”

And what of Willow and her unresolved feelings toward Tara?

“Not gonna say what we have planned for Tara in Season 9 but let’s just say that Willow has some major trauma ahead of her,” Allie says. “Willow maybe has reacted the least well at the end of Season 8 and she will be feeling that daily in the series.”

How big of an impact will Giles’ death have on Season 9?

“The repercussions of Giles death is in some ways is what Season 9 is all about,” Allie says. “There will be flashbacks featuring Giles and everyone will have to deal with what that means.”

DeKnight

Steven S. DeKnight is a man best known to fans for shows like SMALLVILLE, BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, and most recently SPARTACUS (in it’s many forms). DeKnight also contributed to the BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT comic book series from Dark Horse Comics, with a story about Vampy Cat toys and vampires in the mainstream.

ASSIGNMENT X talked to DeKnight recently about his involvement with SEASON EIGHT, and whether he would be back for SEASON NINE.

“They just had a big summit with all of the writers and Dark Horse that I couldn’t attend, I was actually doing commentary for the SPARTACUS: GODS OF THE ARENA DVD,” DeKnight explains. “I’m just so consistently swamped on this show that I can’t do anything.”

He went on to say that while he won’t be return to the land of Buffy at the moment, he was a big fan of SEASON EIGHT and everything creator Joss Whedon and the writers got to do with the series.

“I’m one of the biggest Joss Whedon fans ever,” he says. “I thoroughly enjoyed SEASON EIGHT. One thing about it that I just loved is he kind of got to do what we wanted to do with the BUFFY animated show that we could never get off the ground. In a comic book we could do all the stuff we couldn’t do on the show – you can make Dawn a giant or make her a centaur. It was so fantastic to see that unleashed.”

The experience of writing even the one comic of BUFFY – Season 8 was a good experience for DeKnight who loved being back in that playground and he hopes that his comic will spawn a new BUFFY merchandise item.

“I absolutely had a blast doing it,” he exclaims. “I keep hoping that Dark Horse will release a Vampy Cat plush toy, that’s all I want. I want a Vampy Cat toy!”

Hell, it’s a lot more simple than praising it sometimes, but in the case of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT I really had to struggle to come up with a legitimate list of ten things that could have either been handled better, or been left out of the forty issue story arc all together (CLICK HERE to read our Top 10 Good Things about BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 8).

SEASON EIGHT was an enjoyable return of much loved characters both heroes and villains, and it was nice to see the Scooby Gang back in action. And let’s face it; nothing is ever going to be perfect. You can’t please all of the people all of time. So here are the few exceptions to an otherwise completely enjoyable ride. SEASON EIGHT was a pretty solid season as far as BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER goes, and I for one, can’t wait for SEASON NINE.

So read the list with a grain of salt. These are my humble opinions, and by no means does that make them 100% right. Hopefully some of you out there will agree with me, and hopefully some will disagree…that’s what makes the world go round.

Remember a wise man once said, “Yes, it’s terribly simple. The good guys are always stalwart and true, the bad guys are easily distinguished by their pointy horns or black hats, and, uh, we always defeat them and save the day. No one ever dies, and everybody lives happily ever after.”

1. The Death of Giles

Death of Giles from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Why did this even need to happen? Having Angel snap Giles neck was gratuitous and sloppy story writing, and it just seemed to be there for the single panel shock effect. The death benefited not one single character, and the issue after it only had a tiny bit of resolution with the reading of the will and Faith becoming his sole heir. WASTE OF A GREAT CHARACTER.

2. The Return of Warren (sans skin)

Warren from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Warren was always a weasel of a person, whether he was building sex bots or waving a gun and killing innocent lesbian Wicca – he was always a bad guy. Willow did the world a favor by killing him off, so I hate the 11th hour crap of “he was magically whisked away seconds before his death.” He didn’t add hardly anything to the Season Eight plot – he just was gross wandering around without skin. Plus having Warren alive negates all of his appearances from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER season seven –i.e.- the First can’t take the form of anybody who hasn’t died.

3. The MANY Transformations of Dawn

Dawn from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Dawn. Scrappy-Doo. Never has been a character I liked, or probably ever will like. So to take her through a ridiculous series of transformations from giant to centaur to doll was just pointless. It seemed like a great story idea that never quite got where it was going, and so ended up being a kitsch sub-plot that took time from the more important main stories. Mecha- Dawn was fun, but basically this was a failed attempt to make a boring character more interesting.

4. Angel is Twilight

Buffy & Angel from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

I had this figured out from the first issue where they had a panel of Twilight’s coat and shoes. For some reason I just figured it must be Angel. Having said that, it was a bleh plot ‘twist’ and didn’t fit with anything IDW was doing with the character in his own book. They are going to streamline everything together this year to make sense, but at the time it was extremely confusing. Plus, is there a token booth to possess Angel? Seems to happen an awful lot.

5. Spike in a Spaceship full of Big Bugs

Buffy & Spike from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comic

I don’t even know where to begin with this one, other than it will tie into the IDW Spike comic. Again, at the time of publication, just very strange and made no sense.

6. Dawn and Xander Together Forever

Buffy Issue 31 from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comic

Ummm anyone else get a creepy PEDO vibe from this one? She’s quite a bit younger, and he helped raise her and babysat her. All of his ‘memories’ of the early days of Dawn would be from her pre-teen years. This was just a disturbing plot that I can’t reconcile. It’s too weird and a little too Celine Dion for me.

7. Not Bringing Back Tara

Tara from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comic

So Willow and Tara were always meant to be. The decision to kill her was one of the WORST points in BUFFY history, and on many surveys it is considered the point when the series ‘jumped the shark.’ With all of the magic and hoo ha of SEASON EIGHT, there isn’t any reason (scheduling conflicts etc. to take into account when working with actors) to have not brought her back. Plus Amber Benson, the uber-talented actress that portrayed Tara could write the issues and make it a HUGE event for Dark Horse! Plus Willow realized Tara is the ONLY one for her at the end of SEASON EIGHT, so bring her back for SEASON NINE.

8. The Whole Tibet Adventure

Willow from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comic

Buffy, the Slayer Army, Oz (peaceful and with wife and kid), Eastern Mystic gods, and an army of Twilight soldiers. This storyline not only got out of hand, it blew the roof of ridiculous plots and had giant omnipotent Hindu Gods duking it out with the Slayers and the army. The intense emotional connection of a Willow and Oz reunion took the back burner to this out of control storyline.

9. Buffy and Angel Shag in Space

Buffy & Angel in space from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

So the whole super Buffy and Twilight thing was confusing and a mess all on it’s own without adding in the levels of oddness of Buffy and Angel shagging each other silly in outer space and creating a whole new reality. This also spawned a griffin of some kind which refers to them as father and mother, and just generally everything from there got wacky and out of hand leading to the unwarranted death of Giles.

10. A Drawn Out Printing Schedule

I have no idea if the writers were to blame or Dark Horse, or what, but this single 40 issue arc took forever to complete. There were ridiculous gaps in the printing run and some of those were filled with OK one-shots that tied into the main story. The problem with comics is that most comic book readers don’t have the patience to wait for months and months for the next issue of a book to come out. This is something Joss Whedon had problems with on his ASTONISHING X-MEN run as well. The only request for SEASON NINE is to get the books out on time kids!

The X List: Top 10 Good Things About BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 8 comics

When approaching a list with the title: “The top ten good things about BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER – SEASON 8 comics,” a person has to stop and really consider the subject matter. A normal season of a television show is just that: one season, or a year, or 23 or so episodes.

Well, BUFFY – SEASON EIGHT started in 2007 and just finished in 2011. That’s a long storyline to keep track of with lots of BUFFY alum scribes, and other comic writers coming and going to keep the stories fresh and interesting. For the most part “Season Eight” has some interesting moments, and some revelations that make you do a double take.

But, now everything is wrapped up with 40 issues and some one-shots. Before “Season Nine” starts, and before Spike and Angel move to Dark Horse Comics from IDW, let’s look at some of the favorite highlights for our resident Slayer and her Scooby Gang.

1) Buffy the Vampire Slayer Returns!

Who would have thought that several years after the show went off the air, that fans would have a cannon continuing story to follow, much less one involving Joss Whedon and a lot of the BUFFY scribes? This was a triumphant return of a much loved universe, and good or bad, people went crazy for it.

2) Buffy and Fray Crossover

Buffy & Fray from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

I personally enjoyed the future slayer story that Joss crafted a few years back for Dark Horse. Set in a dystopian future Fray ends up being the first Slayer called in forever, and she possesses the Slayer’s axe that Buffy had in Season Seven. So to bring Buffy herself into that universe was great to see, and it tied everything together nicely.

3) Buffy + Angel + Spike Sex Dream

Buffy Angel & Spike from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

I think that one speaks for itself.

4) Dark Witch Willow Supreme Being

Dark Witch Willow from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

In the future where Buffy has to team up with thief and Slayer Fray, the Big Bad is none other than my favorite Dark Witch Willow. Willow has been around for a long time in the future time line, and she is even darker than before. A further twist on the lovable character. Plus Dark Witch Willow has always been a warm fuzzy for me.

5) Giles and Faith Together Again For the First Time

Faith & Giles from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Never the best of friends, Giles and Faith end up taking on missions together after Buffy essentially stops having any use for either of them. This created some nice new dynamics for these two, and Giles even leaves everything to Faith in his will.

6) Buffy Under a Fellow Slayer’s Umbrella

Buffy & Satsu from BUFFY SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Buffy explores her bi-sexual side with a fellow slayer. An interesting plot twist that turned heads, and made lots of news.

7) A Revisiting of the BUFFY ANIMATED SERIES

The Animated Cast of BUFFY from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER - Season Eight | ©2011 Dark Horse Comics

One issue (mainly in the form of dream sequences) came back to the ill-fated BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER ANIMATED SERIES. This stand alone comic gave fans a taste of what the show might have been like.

8 ) Harmony Gets a TV Show

Harmony from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

Everyone’s favorite dingy vamp came back into the mix just long enough to bother Buffy and the Slayers and in the process ended up with her own TV show. Just a small piece of inspired brilliance during the comic run.

9) Super Human Buffy

Issue #32 from BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER SEASON EIGHT | © 2011 Dark Horse Comics

It was kind of just cool to see Buffy with all manner of new powers akin to those of Superman. You will believe a Slayer can fly.

10) Spike and Angel Return to the Fold

Some of the Spike and Angel comics over at IDW have been brilliant, but it was still nice to see them return to the Buffy Universe proper. Even though Angel was Twilight and Spike showed up in a spaceship piloted by big bugs.
