In NBC’s hospital drama NEW AMSTERDAM, now on Tuesday nights in its second season, Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) continues to face personal and professional battles. Max has just gained a baby daughter and lost his wife, all while trying to put patients over profits at the title hospital in New York. Max’s good friend and colleague, psychiatrist Dr. Iggy Frome, is played by Tyler Labine. Labine, originally from Ontario, Canada, is perhaps better known for playing scruffy, scrappy people than for upstanding physicians. Some of Labine’s credits include the films TUCKER AND DALE VS EVIL, DIRK GENTLY’S HOLISTIC DETECTIVE […]Read On »

TV Review: BREAKING IN – Season 2 – “The Contra Club” – Season Premiere

Megan Mullally, Christian Slater, Erin Richards, Christian Slater, Bret Harrison, Odette Annable and Alphonso McAuley in BREAKING IN - Season 2 | ©2012 Fox/Jeff Minton

Stars: Christian Slater, Megan Mullally, Bret Harrison, Alphonso McAuley, Erin Richards, Jennifer Irwin, Odette Annable Writer: Adam F. Goldberg Director: Seth Gordon Network: Fox, airs Tuesday nights Original Telecast: March 7, 2012 One of the most promising new comedies last Spring was the Christian Slater starrer BREAKING IN on Fox. It’s a series that focused on a security firm run by the brash, unpredictable and enigma-like Oz (Slater) and the wacky employees he has. The series struggled throughout the seven episodes to find the right balance and tone. While I appreciated what the series did, it didn’t bowl me over […]Read On »

TCA 2011: Fox says BREAKING IN is still not officially dead

When is a show cancelled, but not cancelled? That’s been the mystery behind the Christian Slater comedy BREAKING IN that did pretty good during midseason this year on Fox after AMERICAN IDOL. It wasn’t enough for it to get an official Season 2 renewal, but in recent months, there’s been movement that could bring the series back. Recent extensions on cast contracts have showed that the show has a little bit life left in it, and today at the Summer 2011 Television Critics Association Fox session, Fox Entertainment President Kevin Reilly explained that the show could get an official last […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “Modern Plagues”

Michelle Trachtenberg and Bret Harrison in LOVE BITES - "Modern Plagues" | ©2011 NBC/Adam Taylor

Stars: Becky Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer, Michelle Trachtenberg, Bret Harrison, Matt Long, Donald Faison, Jaime Pressly Writer: Cindy Chupack Director: Anton Cropper Network: NBC, Thursdays @ 10 PM Airdate: July 21, 2011 If it’s still a little unclear on why someone decided to revive the LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE format – albeit in a much less cartoonish incarnation – in 2011, the results are quite pleasant. While one of our main characters, Annie (Becky Newton) is off on maternity leave while carrying her sister’s child, Annie’s waitress colleague Jodie (Michelle Trachtenberg) has made the big leap, giving up her own […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “Boys to Men”

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writer: Danielle Sanchez-witzel & Joe Lawson Director: Jamie Babbit Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: July 14, 2011 I’ve given up on trying to figure out what the hell is going on with LOVE BITES. One week it’s horrendously bad, the next week it’s quite good. The tone has varied, the stories are all of the place, yet, some times it gets everything right. This week, with “Boys to Men”, the series almost feels like the writers have finally broken completely out of their shells and found clever ways of truly connecting […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “TMI”

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writer: Colleen McGuinness Director: John Scott Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: July 7, 2011 I don’t envy the writers and producers of LOVE BITES – NBC’s summer anthology series about love, romance and other dysfunctional relationship woes. It has to be hard to come up with new characters, situations and scenarios every week and then wrap them around a common theme. With established series, you have regular characters and quirks to carry you through those weeks where nothing is working. Here, outside of three recurring lead (who usually end up […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “Stand and Deliver”

Beau Bridges and Ben Feldman in LOVE BITES - "Stand and Deliver" | ©2011 NBC/Trae Patton

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writer: David McHugh, Matt Flannegan Director: John David Cotes Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: June 30, 2011 It was bound to happen, but LOVE BITES takes a huge step backwards with “Stand and Deliver” after several weeks of striking a nice balance between its characters, storytelling and comedy. Nothing works in “Stand and Deliver,” which is a shame since I think this show has improved considerably since the pilot. The big issue comes back to storytelling and the guest cast – and this week it’s weak on all fronts (aside […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “Sky High”

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writer: Joe Lawson Director: Timothy Busfield Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: June 23, 2011 How did I end up liking LOVE BITES? Let’s just say by brute force! Being chosen to review the show against my will, and hating the premiere episode, I’m now finding it a pretty agreeable and enjoyable summer time filler. The structure of a weekly romantic anthology series didn’t seem like the best idea in the world at first, but since it’s found a way to have a handful of recurring characters and bringing on a great […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – “Keep on Truckin’”

Becki Newton in LOVE BITES | ©2011 NBC/Chris Haston

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writers: Tracy Poust, Jon Kinnally & David Feeney (“Goodbye Boob,” “Cutlets”), Larry Wilmore & Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (“Ninja Vanish”) Directors: John Scott (“Goodbye Boob,” “Cutlets”), Marc Buckland (“Ninja Vanish”) Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: June 16, 2011 It’s taken two weeks, but the initially dreadful LOVE BITES has grown, just two episodes in, into something quite watchable and sort of entertaining. Yes, you heard me say it – the show is getting better and is attempting to take its love connection stories and actually striving for something a little more complicated, slightly […]Read On »

TV Review: LOVE BITES – Season 1 – “How To …”

Bret Harrison and Michelle Trachtenberg in LOVE BITES - "How To ..." | ©2011 NBC/Lewis Jacobs

Stars: Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, Constance Zimmer Writers: Colleen McGuinness (“Banana Bread”, “Decent Proposal”), Danielle Sanchez-Witzels & Larry Wilmore (“Eyegasms”) Directors: Wendey Stanzler (“Banana Bread”, “Decent Proposal”), Marc Buckland (“Eyegasms”) Network: NBC, airs Thursday nights Original Telecast: June 9, 2011 After literally crucifying the series premiere of LOVE BITES last week, I felt that this LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE-type anthology series deserved a second chance. After all, debuts of most TV series that turn out to be great, usually decline after that. In this case, there’s no where to go but up, right? Surprisingly, “How To …” is much better than […]Read On »
