RAMS: Icelander Atli Örvarsson shepherds the score – Interview

There’s a muscular, solitary spirit that hails from The Great White Nord, as well as a natural eccentricity. Perhaps that might explain the individualistic, off-kilter spirit running through even the most bombastic multiplex movies that Icelander Atli Örvarsson has scored in Hollywood. Drawn to Hans Zimmer’s orbit like so many talented western European composers (if geographically located on a mostly frozen volcanic land mass), Örvarsson rose through such American TV shows as DRAGNET and LAW AND ORDER: CRIMINAL INTENT to impress with his surreal film scores for BABYLON A.D. and THE FOURTH KIND. With Viking blood no doubt in his […]Read On »

CD Reviews: COLETTE and A SINGLE SHOT soundtracks

COLETTE soundtrack | ©2013 Movie Score Media

While he’s not busy re-animating ghouls, killing hags and battling demons in such ragingly entertaining genre scores as HANSEL AND GRETEL WITCH HUNTERS and THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS,  Icelandic composer Atli Orvarsson is doing his thing for the arthouse, and revealing even more impressive layers to his talent in the bargain. Indeed, COLETTE counts as one of his most evocative works for this Holocaust-themed score about impossible survival at Auschwitz. While sorrow is very much a part of the powerful emotions that flood COLETTE‘s love story between two inmates, the score, like the film’s characters, isn’t about to give in to […]Read On »

The result of these absurdist revisionisms have given film scores some memorable monster mashes, as heavy metal guitars, ripping electric percussion and blasting orchestras have jammed with the far more sedate fiddles of Abraham Lincoln’s prairie, or the daintily plucked harps of Lewis C. Carroll’s Victorian England. Now it’s time […]Read On »
