Blu-ray Review: NORM OF THE NORTH

NORM OF THE NORTH | © 2016 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

Outside of Disney, animated films are either hit or miss when it comes delivering something you as a parent can feel good about letting your children watch. While NORM OF THE NORTH isn’t necessarily a bad movie for kids. The number of pee and fart jokes that are contained within leave a lot to be desired when it comes to letting kids watch what you hope will be a decent animated flick. The story centers on Norm, a polar bear, who learns that humans are moving into his home in the vastness of the Arctic. He doesn’t really think […]Read On »

THE CONGRESS composer Max Richter waltzes once again – Interview

THE CONGRESS soundtrack | ©2014 Milan Records

In the world of modern classical-cum-film composers, few musicians are doing more to stretch sonic boundaries than the German-born, London-located musician named Max Richter. Making his way from stage to ballet and concert hall ensembles, Richter’s early work impressed as it often combining beautifully solemn string melodies with an alt. electronic attitude. Concept albums like “Memoryhouse” and “The Blue Notebooks” sung with Richter’s unique admiration for such composers as Philip Glass and John Adams, not to recently mention his wittily hip deconstruction of Vivaldi for “The Four Seasons.” It was this mesmerizing sound that mixed aching melodies with a hip […]Read On »

Weiss, Jay Scherick, David Ronn, Karey Kirkpatrick Director: Raja Gosnell Distributor: Sony Release Date: July 31, 2013 Rarely do I get to sit with my 10-year-old daughter and enjoy a movie equally as much as she does. But, alas, I did just that watching THE SMURFS 2. A fun and tender story about choosing how you want to live your life and that family isn’t necessarily something you are born into. SMURFS 2 opens with the diabolical Gargamel (Hank Azaria) plotting to […]Read On »

Blu-ray Review: WRECK-IT RALPH – ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION

Rating: PG Stars (voices): John C. Reilly, Sarah Silverman, Jack McBrayer, Jane Lynch, Alan Tudyk Writers: Phil Johnston and Jennifer Lee, story by Rich Moore and Phil Johnston Director: Rich Moore Distributor: Walt Disney Home Entertainment Release Date: March 12, 2013 Suggested Retail Price: $49.99 Hands down, WRECK-IT RALPH was one of the best animated films of the year. And this was a year that also had such exceptional entries as FRANKENWEENIE and PARANORMAN. That said, I was a bit disappointed that the inferior BRAVE (good, not great) bested all of them for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars. Thankfully, […]Read On »

Interview: WRECK-IT RALPH star John C. Reilly wrecks it

Ralph in WRECK-IT RALPH | ©2012 Walt Disney Pictures

John C. Reilly voices the title hero in Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH. He’s a real-life hero to the press attending the WRECK-IT RALPH premiere, because after every single one of his colleagues has disappeared inside the theatre, Reilly comes back out to make sure that every reporter who has been waiting for a quote gets one. In short, Reilly is the epitome of a class act. ASSIGNMENT X: Obviously, WRECK-IT RALPH isn’t motion-capture, but did you give the animators any sort of motion reference? JOHN C. REILLY: No, it’s not motion-capture. That’s like a dirty work at Disney Studios. The animators […]Read On »

In the venerable videogame franchise STREET FIGHTER, M. Bison is a Boss, aka top villain, character. M. Bison appears as himself in Disney’s new 3D animated hit WRECK-IT RALPH. Without providing big spoilers, let’s just say that we see a very different side of M. Bison in RALPH than we see in STREET FIGHTER. Actor Gerald Rivers has been the voice of M. Bison for any iterations of STREET FIGHTER. We caught up to him on the WRECK-IT RALPH red carpet, where he was extremely cordial and friendly in discussing voicing M. Bison’s guest turn in RALPH. ASSIGNMENT X: How […]Read On »

CD Review: BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES: VOLUME 2 (3,500 edition)

BATMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES: VOLUME 2 soundtrack | ©2012 Nathan Furst

Shirley Walker was a woman who shattered the stereotype that no female composer could assume the musical costume of a male superhero, let alone a major Hollywood action score. Walker’s dynamic orchestral sound proved them wrong from THE FLASH to TURBULENCE. But if there’s one identity that she’ll likely be remembered for assuming, then it’s the darkly heroic music of the animated Batman, a lavish, film noir sound that embodied the WB network’s retro vision of the Caped Crusader, one that many fans still view as the finest representation of their DC icon. Walker’s work wasn’t simply “cartoon” music that […]Read On »

Voicing Ralph is John C. Reilly who spoke to the press at Comic-Con 2012 about being in the new cartoon and getting used to the voiceover medium. “With voice over work, you take the whole experience you normally do with your body and channel it all into your voice,” says Reilly. “I became somewhat good at various sound effects. They had to […]Read On »

CD Review: THE BLACK CAULDRON

THE BLACK CAULDRON soundtrack | ©2012 Intrada Records

Even if Disney animation didn’t exactly get their answer to THE LORD OF THE RINGS with this 1985 fantasy spectacle, THE BLACK CAULDRON did brew up the last epic genre score that Elmer Bernstein would compose for a major studio. There’s certainly no mistaking his inimitable touch during the era, as CAULDRON‘s theremin-like Ondes Martenot, playful electronics and bold, brassy statements are part of the same, tasty brew from whence the likes of SATURN 3, SPACEHUNTER and HEAVY METAL sprang. But if there’s one Bernstein score that THE BLACK CAULDRON really shares its lifeblood with, then it’s the over-the-top sound […]Read On »
