Movies:

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD | (c) 2013 Fox Home Entertainment

A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD – Obviously going into this film you have to realize it is another DIE HARD movie with a protagonist that is quite the indestructible force. After four films of John McClane (Bruce Willis) battling the odds and bad guys and with numerous wounds along the way, seeing him do it again and in extreme fashion is obviously the next step. Set in Russia, McClane travels there to find his son who he believes has gotten himself into to trouble. When McClane finds him, the trouble only begins as a whole horde of bad guys guns for the duo and once again he must fight for his life and that of his son, who happens to be adept at firing a gun as well.

While the plotline is certainly not as complex as some of the previous installments, like I said, at this point we aren’t expecting to see another first DIE HARD where a complex plot to steal a bunch of money is happening and McClane battles a group to stop it. This has bigger explosions, bigger chases, more bullets while sacrificing the plot. Which means not a lot of purists will be happy but the action aficionados will be cooing. On Blu-ray it is that much more bold and beautiful and really the best way to see this. Rent it if you are hesitant, buy it if you love out and out action with the familiar character you have grown to enjoy.

IDENTITY THIEF | (c) 2013 Universal Home Entertainment

IDENTITY THIEF – Jason Bateman may be riding high with the new season of ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT on Netflix so this is a great time for his comedy to come out on video this week where he gets to show off his chops alongside Melissa McCarthy in this pretty good film about a serious subject that is only getting worse by the year. Obviously to make a movie like IDENTITY THIEF you have to make it over-the-top crazy in order to make it work since most of the time a normal person just needs to prove themselves to be the victim in order for it to be made right. However, in this case, extreme measures have to be taken in order for Bateman’s character to make amends not only to his credit score but to his new bosses and the police. With suspension of disbelief in place, this is a pretty funny comedy with some genuine laugh-out-loud moments from McCarthy and Bateman helms the film in hilarious fashion. Definitely worth checking out.

WARM BODIES | (c) 2013 Summit Entertainment

WARM BODIES – Speaking of leaving your brain at the door, WARM BODIES is a must in order to believe that a flesh-eating zombie would be able to come back and find romance in a human female. Luckily, this isn’t a film that takes itself too seriously nor should it. Some of the best moments come before the romance even begins where we learn about the boring life of an undead walker as he meanders from place to place and sometimes tries to feed on humans when he gets hungry. These moments are most certainly the most fun and funny to be found in a zombie comedy/romance. When the zombie in question eats the brain of the boyfriend of the main girl, he becomes attached to her (because in this zombie world they experience the feelings of the person they eat). Romeo and Juliet references abound here and surprisingly it isn’t as dumb as it sounds and it works in a strange way to have a romance blossom under the circumstances of the apocalypse. Interesting stuff and worth renting when you have a chance.

Television:

BREAKING BAD: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON | (c) 2013 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

BREAKING BAD: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON – All the things you hear about BREAKING BAD are correct. It truly is one of the best shows on TV. Walter White (Bryan Cranston) at the end of Season 4 made the decision that he needed to take out Gus Fring in order to protect himself and his family but maybe more importantly to White to secure his place as the drug kingpin that he had become. He did so with a great plan and it worked. Now, completely in charge of his fate, White doesn’t stop with his plan to secure his spot in recruiting former Fring muscleman Mike (Jonathan Banks) and his long partner Jesse (Aaron Paul). The transformation of White – from innocent school teacher looking to make money for his family before he dies of cancer to drug kingpin – has been a glorious thing to watch in the past seasons and it all comes together in Season 5 as White is ruthless and cold. He cares not for how much money he has but the power he has and is willing to do anything to keep it. That becomes even more problematic when his brother-in-law in the DEA takes one step closer to discovering he is the evil Eisenberg. Excellent stuff and a must own if you haven’t seen this season.

FALLING SKIES: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

FALLING SKIES: THE COMPLETE SECOND SEASON – FALLING SKIES is one of those shows that seems to fly under the radar when people discuss good science fiction TV. But with the third season coming up it begs the question as to why it isn’t thought of or more popular. It may be that it is on a station that is not known for being a heavy when it comes to science fiction in TNT. But it is a show that should be checked out if you are a fan of big, bad aliens coming to Earth to kill everyone on the planet and small band of rebels doing everything they can to stop that from happening. Things get even more interesting in Season 2 when the small band of rebels learn that a bigger group of survivors are hunkered down fighting the aliens. But not all is wonderful in this revelation. Despite not having the best acting or the best special effects, the family ties, the friendships and good plotline make this a show science fiction fans should check out before it returns for Season 3.

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: THE COMPLETE THIRD SEASON – ABC Family’s unique show about four close friends that may or may not have been involved in a murder of one of their other friends continues this summer with another season. So in the meantime, here is your chance to catch up on what you missed in the last season to prep for the upcoming one. A usual there are plenty of secrets being tossed around and untimely deaths as well as new schools and new players that make life anything but normal. Of course, romance is always in the air on this show, so it isn’t all doom and gloom. All 24 episodes of the third season are included here along with a new featurette, deleted scenes, gag reel and webisodes.

Movies:

DARK SKIES | (c) 2013 Anchor Bay Home Entertainment

DARK SKIES – Aliens invasion movies are a dime a dozen in the horror genre. You just have to do a quick Google search to see just how many are actually out there. Most are crap. A few have come along that shine above the rest and the remainder are not bad to watch but nothing special. DARK SKIES falls into this last category as it isn’t bad, the acting, the spooks and even the idea is pretty good but it isn’t anything that you will remember after the credits roll. It just doesn’t have that impact. Maybe it is the result of a watered-down PG-13 rating or maybe it is just the subject matter that has been done so many times that you have seen it all at this time. Keri Russell is especially good as the concerned mother and again the ideas here are actually pretty fun, but just don’t expect it to be FIRE IN THE SKY or another quality alien invasion title.

Television:

DOCTOR WHO SERIES 7, PART 2 | (c) 2013 BBC Warner

DOCTOR WHO: SERIES 7, PART 2 – If you have ever read this column, you know that I am no fan of the splitting of television series because I think it’s ridiculous that you are forced to pay more for two sets when you could just pay less for one. That doesn’t mean that the television contained within isn’t a good just the whole idea of doing split series is the problem. The second half of the seventh season of DOCTOR WHO (modern era) brings all of the previous episodes regarding Clara (the simply beautiful and awesome Jenna Louise Coleman), the Impossible Girl, and why she has been in so many places at the same time and seemingly died helping the Doctor complete a mission. It is actually fairly interesting how they wrap up everything but then also give us a huge bombshell at the end of the finale with what will sure have people talking until the eighth season starts. I won’t spoil it but it is pretty huge. The other episodes are pretty good too with a journey inside the Tardis, a host of alien invasions (naturally) and more.

DOCTOR WHO THE SNOWMEN | (c) 2013 BBC Warner

DOCTOR WHO: THE SNOWMEN – This is the Christmas special that has become nearly a tradition every year. It also gave us the second appearance of Jenna Louise Coleman as another character that interestingly enough the Doctor remembers from Season 6 and does not understand why she is alive or at least another person. This special features what would be a number of links to the entire season including the big bad villain that reoccurs throughout the season. A group of evil snowmen are terrorizing London in 1842 and the Doctor must find out why it is happening and who is doing it. Of course, there are plenty of twists and turns along the way including why Coleman’s character is there (we find out again in the finale of Season 7).

RED WIDOW Season 1 | (c) 2013 Disney Home Video

RED WIDOW: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON – Radha Mitchell (maybe most famous in PITCH BLACK among other films) stars in this interesting series where she stars as someone who gets involved with the mafia after she learns that her late husband was a mobster. She then goes into revenge mode and sets off to take out the people that did her husband in. While the main plot is solid and the acting is actually really good, there are a number of subplots that just come off as illogical and not needed. Also the labeling this as the first season is a mistake as the series was not picked up by ABC for a second season so don’t expect a second season to becoming in the fall – and why this is being released now and not in September.

LONGMIRE THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

LONGMIRE: THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON – A show that did get picked up for a second season was LONGMIRE which is making its second season debut soon. Who knew that a modern western mixed with typical cop themes could make for not only an interesting show but in a show that is damn good Based on the popular books from Craig Johnson, the show centers on Walt Longmire, a passionate but skilled lawman that is recovering from the death of his wife. Robert Taylor is an interesting actor that grows on you as you watch the show. At first, there seems to be nothing special about him or the character of Longmire. But as the show goes on you get involved with the rustic look of the show, the good cast and even Taylor and his understated energy in the role. Worth checking out to catch up on what you missed so you can see Season 2 as it is aired.

Movies:

THE LAST STAND | (c) 2013 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

THE LAST STAND – Before Arnold Schwarzenegger went off to become the Governator, he was racking up a pretty long list of bad movies. Long gone were the RUNNING MAN, TOTAL RECALL, RAW DEAL, COMMANDO, PREDATOR days instead we got END OF DAYS, THE 6TH DAY, LAST ACTION HERO and more. Luckily, THE LAST STAND does not continue Arnie’s bad movie trend. While it isn’t a great film, it is fun and has enough action, violence and harsh language that it harkens a bit back to the golden age of Arnie. It also plays to the aging actor as well. There are plenty of jokes about his age and his experience and he isn’t the invincible killing machine as he was in some of the earlier films (although he’s very tough).

The supporting parts from Johnny Knoxville, Forest Whitaker, Peter Stormare and Jamie Alexander are throw aways and could literally be occupied by any actor (maybe except Knoxville) but the real star here is obviously Schwarzenegger and always has been in these types of movies. Basically, a slew of terrible FBI and police let a dangerous drug dealer go free and literally cannot stop his car from Las Vegas all the way to the Mexican border. In the last town before Mexico, this bad guys cronies are constructing a bridge for him to jump a large crevice and sheriff Arnie comes in to stop them and confront the drug dealer. It’s fun. It’s mindless. It’s an Arnie movie. Check it out.

SIDE EFFECTS | (c) 2013 Open Road Films

SIDE EFFECTS – You may have been confused about what Steven SoderBergh’s SIDE EFFECTS may have been about given the trailer. It seemed that it might be able a medical breakthrough that helps people overcome depression but also gives them homicidal impulses. Well, in some respects, this is true but the movie is more about Dr. Banks (Jude Law) trying to prove that one of his patients he was treating for depression, Emily (Rooney Mara), killed her husband for financial gain rather than a result of some chemical reaction to the medication she was on. There are plenty of twists and turns that keep you guessing here and there about what really is happening, which is good, however, you can see some of big reveals coming. There is some interesting commentary about the drug business here and how much doctors and others are willing to go in order to make a buck – even to the point of murder. But the corporate responsibility angle or wide spreading conspiracy isn’t here which may make for a different movie on the subject.

PARKER | (c) 2013 Universal Home Entertainment

PARKER – Jason Statham is the king of the one-word action flicks: SAFE, BLITZ, TRANSPORTER, CRANK and now PARKER. In all of these movies, Statham is pretty much the same character: tough, hard to kill, good at fighting, good at killing and above all else honest and genuinely a good guy. In PARKER, this is exactly who he is. He turns to crime in order to help out his girlfriend and get a step up but when the deal goes bad and his partners turn on him, Parker sets out to get even because people even in crime should act as decent individuals. He gets some help from a down-on-her-luck real estate agent played by Jennifer Lopez who is pretty interchangeable here with any actress but still does a fair enough job in helping bring those that wronged Parker to justice. As always, the movie looks that much better on Blu-ray so I recommend watching it on that format to get the full impact.

ULTIMATE GANGSTER COLLECTION CLASSICS | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

ULTIMATE GANGSTERS COLLECTION: CLASSICS – A cool way to get all the classic gangster movies in one fell swoop. Included here are four movies that harkens back to a more simpler Hollywood, one without big flashy special effects and big budgets but more about characters and the law enforcement officials that went out to take down crime. The four films include THE PUBLIC ENEMY, WHITE HEAT, LITTLE CAESAR and THE PETRIFIED FOREST. Also included is a feature-length documentary on what made the gangster films of old so special and who made them and what they were trying to do with these films called PUBLIC ENEMIES: THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE GANGSTER DRAMA. If you are a fan of the really old school mafia movies, this is one you can’t pass up. Even better, all of these movies have been converted to Blu-ray and this is their debut in high definition.

ULTIMATE GANGSTER COLLECTION CONTEMPORARY | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

ULTIMATE GANGSTERS COLLECTION: CONTEMPORARY – But say you don’t really know those movies and aren’t really a fan of the old gangster movies. Well, this one is for you then. This collection of five modern crime movies is stacked with not just the ultimate mafia film in THE UNTOUCHABLES but also GOODFELLAS, MEAN STREETS, THE DEPARTED and one of my all time favorite movies HEAT, which is simply a great film from point A to point B. All of these movies are collected in this one awesome set where you can spend hours watching just good drama all about the mafia and big bad guys doing bad things. If you don’t already own these films, or want them on Blu-ray, this is simply something you won’t want to pass up.

THE BURNING | (c) 2013 Shout! Factory

THE BURNING – One of the unknown or forgotten gems during the salad days of the 80s slasher extravaganza was THE BURNING that took place, not shockingly, at a summer camp. Early on we see a group of kids bullying another and accidently setting him on fire. Later, he’s recovered in a hospital but escapes never to be seen from again. Fast forward to a few years later and a new group of campers are there and are doing all the sorts of things you have seen in previous films – getting naked, screwing around, doing summer camp activities. Someone doesn’t like this too much and they begin eliminating the councilors and kids with great gusto – including a great scene where a number of kids are taken out all at once on a raft in gory fashion. As the bodies start to pile up – with some great gore and deaths from master Tom Savini in some of his best work ever – they figure out someone is out to get them ending with a pretty clever finale. Restored from the original source material and converted to Blu-ray from Shout! Factory this is a great gem for anyone who loves good horror and classic slasher action.

THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN | (c) 2013 Shout! Factory

THE TOWN THAT FEARED SUNDOWN – The first time this title has come to video in a long, long time and luckily Scream Factory, the horror label from Shout! Factory, has unveiled it on Blu-ray. While not nearly as fun or classic as THE BURNING, this may be considered the grandfather of slasher films as it tells the story of a masked man that goes on a terror spree through a small town in the 1950s. The cops and feds race to figure out just who is doing it and why while the murderer takes his evil out on poor couples that are innocently necking at a local hang out. While slow paced for modern movies, at the time it was brutal in the ways it depicted innocent people getting brutalized in often hilarious ways – the best being the killer strapping a knife to a trombone and playing a deadly tune on a woman’s body.

DARK CIRCLES | (c) 2013 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

DARK CIRCLES – Early parenthood sucks. You have a screaming little thing that needs you at every turn with feeding, changing, snugging or whatever else is needed. Plus, when this little demon comes home, it turns your sleeping cycle into a crazy messed up world where night is day and day is night. DARK CIRCLES, the latest After Dark original, plays to this horrifying aspect of parenthood with this horror movie about lack of sleep, what it does to us mentally and a haunted house with a nasty mother type ghost running around killing people. Now personally, I would have loved this to have stayed with the home theme of a lack of sleep causing numerous issues with these two people, however, it still works and ends up being a pretty good horror flick that isn’t scary but not bad.

LAST KIND WORDS | (c) 2013 Image Entertainment

LAST KIND WORDS – The same can’t be said for this horror movie that calling it slow paced is the understatement of the month. The story centers on a 17-year-old that moves to a farm with his parents and is visited by a ghost in the forest. Of course, initially this isn’t known to him and they do what typical 17-year-olds might do when courting a relationship. What follows is, like I said, a slow, very slow burn to the finish where the kid learns about all the bad stuff that went down on the farm and tries to save the soul of the girl that he has fallen for, even if she is a ghost. If you have nothing else to watch it might be worth it but other than that, do something else.

COOL AIR | (c) 2013 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

COOL AIR – Unfortunately, it doesn’t get much better in the horror department with COOL AIR. In along line of really bad production films from Lionsgate, this one supposedly is based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft where a young dude checks into an apartment house surrounded by weird people. The weirdest being a doctor that has prolonged her life by keeping herself in an environment that is about 50 degrees. When the young guy has a heart attack for some reason, the doctor saves him and they begin a strange relationship where he learns that the doctor has been performing surgeries on the other people in the apartment using her abilities to prolong life and bring those back from the dead. It sounds better than it is. The production values are minimal and the story drags and there is nothing scary here. Again, passable if you have nothing else going for you.

New to Blu:

NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION – Go to Wally World with the Griswolds in this 30th anniversary edition (feel old yet?)

CAPTAIN AMERICA – Not the modern version, not the 80s version, this is the 90s version! Now experience the cheesy, so awful its good scenes featuring our true patriot in stunning high def for the first time.

Television:

TRUE BLOOD THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON | (c) 2013 HBO Home Video

TRUE BLOOD: THE COMPLETE FIFTH SEASON – I thought I might give up on TRUE BLOOD. How much of the same ole, same ole can we take. Sookie (Anna Paquin) loves Bill (Stephen Moyer), Sookie loves Eric (Alexander Skarsgard), Sookie hates Bill or Eric or whoever. Plus with all the fairy bullsh** and constant replaying of plotlines it just wasn’t something I wanted to continue with. That changed when I watched the first few episodes of Season 5. Bill and Eric get in deep with the Vampire Authority that secretly believe they can bring back their God, Lilith, by becoming the predators they were meant to be and appeasement is not an option. It leads to some pretty nasty scenes where vampires are killing en mass and each other. This brought me back in to the show as did a slew of new hot chicks getting naked and some interesting subplots involving Jason Stackhouse (Ryan Kwanten), Jessica (Deborah Ann Woll) and Sam (Sam Trammell). So maybe if you found yourself not feeling TRUE BLOOD any longer, check it out as you may be dragged back in.

MAMA – A pretty good but pretty sad horror flick about two girls that get lost once their father goes off the deep end and takes them to a remote shack in the middle of nowhere after killing his wife. As he just about kills the girls (and presumably then himself) a dark creature attacks him. Fast forward a few years and the man’s brother is searching all parts of the forest where they were lost looking for his nieces. When they are found they are covered head to toe in dirt and more animal than anything else. Taken in by the uncle and his girlfriend (Jessica Chastain from ZERO DARK THIRTY), they try to establish a family but are continually hindered by the kids fear and following of something they refer to as “Mama.” We learn that this is actually a vengeful spirit that has roamed the Earth because of wrongs that were done to her.

MAMA is not your typical movie as you feel very much for the children but it isn’t scary either and the CG spirit isn’t that great in terms of special effects but it is more of the emotion of the kids (especially if you have a family) that will connect you. But scares are few and far between and so that drags it down as does some of the loooong times where nothing really happens of interest. Despite the bad CG, it always looks better in high def so check it out there.

SUPERMAN UNBOUND | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

SUPERMAN: UNBOUND – Another cool animated flick from Warner Bros. focuses on Superman having to put his personal life with Lois Lane as well as his training of Supergirl on hold when the thing responsible for the destruction of Krypton, Brainiac, comes to Earth with a mind to destroy the planet as well. The ever-improving android has been collecting pieces of cities from various planets – including Supergirl’s home city of Kandor – and wants to add Metropolis to his collection. Of course, that won’t sit well with Superman or Supergirl and the two must fight it out in order to protect what they value most. With some really good animation and a decent story this continues what has become a really good direct-to-video series and hopefully will continue in the future.

THE GREAT GATSBY MIDNIGHT IN MANHATTAN | (c) 2013 BBC Warner

THE GREAT GATSBY: MIDNIGHT IN MANHATTAN – Just in time for the major movie release of the THE GREAT GATSBY starring Leonardo DiCaprio this is a documentary that focuses on F. Scott Fitzgerald and his life in writing the great novel as well as all the tribulations that he went through during the time of his writing the classic. The documentary looks at his relationship with Ernest Hemingway as well as his final days in Hollywood. It is an interesting documentary as it opens up the whole idea that the Jazz-age that is widely glamorized was not as exciting and great as reality. It also sheds some light onto Fitzgerald’s own build-up that he was a raging alcoholic. Some interesting stuff for those that are interested in the history of the man and the book.

New to Blu:

SHANGHAI NOON COLLECTION – This 2-pack features both movies for the first time on Blu-ray. If you enjoyed this quasi-modern western this is a good pick up in high def.

GAMER 3-D – This came out a few years back as a futuristic type game where a human controls an inmate in a series of live-action, fight-to-the-death. It’s back on Blu-ray and this time converted to 3-D for your pleasure.

PRIVATE PRACTICE: THE COMPLETE SIXTH SEASON – The final season of PRIVATE PRACTICE is upon us on DVD and that means that your collection will be complete for this show, you could care less or you are waiting it out for the obligatory complete season – which may or may not be coming. The GREY’S ANATOMY spinoff didn’t end without some much needed drama as Addison (Kate Walsh) had to deal with some serious challenges as well as the rest of the crew that occupy the office. As with many of these TV dramas much of what we see is completely crazy and weird but given most doctor shows have their fair share it isn’t much of a surprise. But for fans, this is a proper send off and one that will leave people happy – if not wanting more of the show.

Movies:

BROKEN CITY | (c) 2013 Fox Home Entertainment

BROKEN CITY – An OK crime story about a disgraced police officer played by Mark Wahlberg that gets a gig tracking the mayor’s wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who the mayor (Russell Crowe) believes is cheating on him. Of course, this not really the motive of the mayor and he has alternative intentions but Wahlberg’s character now is on the rope for a crime that he had no part in. He must now not only find the truth but also the killer in order to avoid jail or even death. BROKEN CITY has a lot of star power going for it and that’s a good thing because the film itself is pretty run-of-the-mill. In fact, if it weren’t for such good actors involved it probably wouldn’t be worth a viewing. There are some decent twists and turns but right from the start you know what’s going on and you’d think that Wahlberg would be more attentive to this fact.

The other issue is the pacing. It drags so much at times you want to just read a book between something actually happening. And knowing what is going to happen because this is a dime-a-dozen when it comes to plotline makes it that much worse. Still, good acting, good looking movie that if you have nothing to do on a weekend or a night might be worth a whirl but don’t expect the greatness of the cast to live up to the hype.

MANBORG | (c) 2013 Dark Sky Films

MANBORG – Props to the title alone here but the movie is actually really good fun. It is a throwback (which is common these days) to the old, cheeseball science fiction films with low rent special effects, superbly bad acting (intentional by the way) and out-of-place dialogue. Obviously, with the title as it is and a premise of the armies of Hell attacking the Earth, everything you see is made-to-be silly and over-the-top including a knife-wielding hot chick, a punk rock dude and a kung-fu master that tag along Manborg’s side to fight the evil Count Draculon. Calling Arnold Schwarzenegger, you missed the boat not being in this one. Anyway, don’t expect much and you will find yourself enjoying the hell out of this intentionally terrible film.

VAMPIRE LOVERS | (c) 2013 Shout! Factory

VAMPIRE LOVERS – Classic 1970s “erotic” horror from Scream Factory that continues to deliver the goods by releasing classic horror films in stunning high definition for the first time. This one is your typical lots of chicks getting their boobs out while a murderous undead goes around either seducing the population of a small town or just killing people because they get in her way. However, this one has Peter Cushing – yes, Grand Moff Tarkin himself – as a father who has his daughter killed by the vampire chick and sets out to recruit a famous vampire killer in order to dispatch the creature from his town. His town, naturally, filled with hot chicks that are willing to kiss other girls and get naked without much effort. My kind of movie. Sure, the gore and scares are nonexistent and the actual chick on chick action is rather tame but still good fun.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD RESURRECTION | (c) 2013 Lionsgate Home Entertainment

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD: RESURRECTION – While the title may get a few people excited, it may also have many people rolling their eyes at yet another attempt to cash on the classic movie’s name in delivering what would have to be a far inferior movie. As is this case, the latter is especially true here. To even call this horrible zombie movie anything close to NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is an insult to bad zombie movies out there. The entire first part of the film shows the travels of a young black man only to dispatch him in the most asinine way possible and focus on a family that has already had a run in with the living dead. Throw in a random pack of horrible teens that for some reason in the face of the walking dead have decided to kill the living for fun, it really just insults much of what has come before it. As with many of the films that have adopted the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD moniker in the title, avoid it.

THE WICKED | (c) 2013 Image Entertainment

THE WICKED – A decent witch horror about a group of teens (naturally) that take a trip out to a deserted house that supposedly is haunted by an ancient evil. Believing that story to be bunk, they venture out anyway and are caught in a trap where a witch performs a pseudo Elizabeth Bathory on them in order to make herself young and vital again. While predictable, it has some decent moments of frights and gore that will make those willing to watch pretty happy. The storyline also has some good moments involving family and a dead grandfather whose old magic tricks end up being one of the keys to defeating the nasty chick – even if at first they appear to be more filler than anything. Check it out on Netflix or other rental when you get a chance.

New to Blu:

BEN HUR – This is not the classic, this is the remake that pales in comparison but it is being offered for the first time on Blu-ray if you are interested.

FUNNY GIRL – The string of Barbara Streisand films to Blu-ray continues with FUNNY GIRL in its 45th anniversary edition.

Television:

THE SYNDICATE SERIES 1 | (c) 2013 Acorn Media

THE SYNDICATE: SERIES 1 – A group of grocery employees buy lottery tickets in bulk in order to hit it big. When it happens, their immediate wealth has a series of unfortunate circumstances for five of the SYNDICATE. The show is a character study where you learn all about the five main characters and the problems and tribulations each of them are enduring even after winning millions of dollars. Money can’t buy happiness and this definitely a showcase in that the saying is correct, especially when you have done something in the past that you can’t take back. At only five episodes it may seem like a just a few for a series but in England this is pretty commonplace and with a second season coming soon, this is a good chance to catch up on a pretty good show.

THE LORD PETER WIMSEY MYSTERIES | (c) 2013 Acorn Media

THE LORD PETER WIMSEY MYSTERIES: COMPLETE COLLECTION – This includes all five of the original BBC series that was later broadcast in the states on MASTERPIECE THEATER. Ian Carmichael plays Lord Peter Wimsey, an aristocratic detective in the 1920s and 1930s with a masterful brain for solving crime and for that matter stumbling across dastardly deeds – think MURDER, SHE WROTE but British and in the past. The five mysteries – all movie length – include “Clouds of Witness,” “The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club,” “Murder Must Advertise,” “Five Red Herrings” and “The Nine Tailors.” As with many British mysteries there is plenty of lies, deception, affairs, twists and grandstanding but the cool thing is that these are real mysteries that keep you guessing, which is hard to do these days especially on TV. Check it out if you enjoy this type of programming, you won’t be sorry.

The story of WORLDS AWAY revolves around Mia and her interest in a traveling carnival that has stopped to perform in her small Midwestern town. Compelled inside, she is soon drawn to the other main character of the movie the Aerialist. A trapeze mistake results in his fall, leading to an opening of a crack in the earth below the two of them that transports the pair even deeper into the world of Cirque Du Soleil. Soon they are making their way through other incredible Cirque Du Soleil performances in an effort to reunite with one another.

WORLDS AWAY is an effort to transport viewers into the fantastic realms created by the Cirque Du Soleil production teams. On some levels and to a certain capacity this movie is “phoning it in”. It does not introduce new performances but instead relies heavily on the seven shows actively being performed within Las Vegas through 2011.

The story between Mia and the Aerialist is in many ways superimposed over top of these episodic vignettes that allow us to peer in at the larger Cirque Du Soleil universe. The shows that are incorporated here are: O, MYSTÈRE, KÀ, LOVE, ZUMANITY, VIVA ELVIS and CRISS ANGEL BELIEVE. If you have been to any of these within the live arenas, then this will be a familiar rehash to you. However, if you have not, then this is an excellent opportunity to try a little of each and see if there is more there for you.

Take note though as Cirque Du Soleil does retire the shows after a while. They also have been known to cancel them all together if they are not producing the required draw. Seeing some shows becomes a very rare opportunity for a select few that took the initial leap of faith. Luckily, the founders have the foresight to intricately film everything, so that the shows are preserved for all time.

Cirque Du Soleil never fails to create wonder and amaze their captivated audiences and this time is no exception. The film is currently available for purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray, or you can acquire access to a digital rendition via your cable, SaveontvDirect, or media content provider. It will surely delight you. Go WORLDS AWAY.

Blu-ray Review FUTUREWORLD

Stars: Peter Fonda, Blythe Danner, Arthur Hill
Director: Richard T. Heffron
Suggested Retail Price: $19.97

With 1973’s WESTWORLD, writer/director Michael Crichton created an innovative sci-fi film about robots at an adult amusement park that malfunction. Many films have cribbed from this seminal sci-fi film, even though it has become a bit dated. Three years later, a sequel was hatched without Crichton with FUTUREWORLD, and surprisingly, it holds up quite well.

The new Blu-ray release brings to life the film in high-definition with a story that is more INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS than WESTWORLD, and that’s part of its success. Instead of rehashing the first film’s major beats, the movie takes things in a slightly different direction under the scripting of Mayo Simon and George Schenck.

After the malfunction at Westworld, Delos, the corporation behind the amusement park, has reopened and even invited the press to check out what they’re up to including former lovers and now competing reporters Chuck Browning (Peter Fonda) and Tracy Ballard (Blythe Danner).

While there, Chuck and Tracy see how advanced things have become at Delos, particularly with the robotics that can mimic human life forms. In fact, the corporation has found a way to clone people (with their memories, desires, dreams completely intact) without them even knowing it.

As Chuck and Tracy go further down the rabbit hole, they discover they’re part of a far more sinister plot which includes them as well.

FUTUREWORLD has a whole bunch of 1970s kitsch mixed in with its clever sci-fi. It also deals with the paranoia of corporate culture, which has become even more prevalent today.

The acting is a bit over-the-top at times, but Fonda and Danner have a great rapport and keeps the film moving at a brisk pace.

There’s also a very sad failed attempt at bringing back Yul Brenner’s gunslinger character from the original film and it’s completely botched by placing him in the context of a really twisted semi-erotic fantasy sequence.

The direction by Richard T. Heffron is also quite good as FUTUREWORLD proves to be much better than remembered and with the pristine transfer, the look and feel of the movie is better than ever.

The special features are skimpy. You get the theatrical trailer, some radio spots and a still gallery, and that’s about it, but at least it’s something.

While there’s no special features, the High-Def transfer is the biggest bonus and the film is also priced right.

Movies:

JOHN DIES AT THE END | (c) 2013 Magnolia Entertainment

JOHN DIES AT THE END – Woman exploding into snakes. A meat monster coming to life from a freezer. A zombie looking for the axe that killed him. A flying moustache. A bratwurst phone. A mall of the dead. Ginormous hybrid machine creatures. This is just a taste of what awaits you in the wildly entertaining JOHN DIES AT THE END, a bizarre and hilarious film by BUBBA HO-TEP and PHANTASM director Don Coscarelli. Using a black market living drug dubbed soy sauce, Dave (Chase Williams) and John (Rob Mayes) are able to see and fight extra-dimensional creatures looking to enter our world to wreak havoc. The film is a visual feast with tons of wild and outrageous imagery that may or may not be real along with hilarious dialogue and plain stupid events happening throughout.

Dave tells his story to a skeptical reporter, Arnie (played brilliantly by Paul Giamatti), about how he acquired this skill and how the events following changed his life forever. The ending isn’t exactly how you might think given the title but it is rather amusing and just the film overall is a lot of fun. Lots of cool extras too included such as an audio commentary, deleted scenes, making of featurette and more. Highly recommended.

STITCHES | (c) 2013 Dark Sky Films

STITCHES – One hell of a good time is had by STITCHES. Filled with clever and incredibly gory kills and some great circus/clown gags it keeps you laughing while satisfying that much needed gore factor that a lot of slasher films tend to do a really poor job at. This film does it brilliantly. In just about every kill the gore and mayhem goes that one step further to ludicrous in the same way DEAD ALIVE does. The plot isn’t much. A miserable clown visits a bunch of kids during a birthday party but when a prank goes wrong, the clown is killed accidently in a hilarious dishwasher-knife-eye combo. Six years later, the same kids along with a host of other high schoolers attend a party and Stitches the clown comes back for the dead to get some clown vengeance. Definitely worth your time and I wish more imports from England had this style of not taking itself seriously while delivering the goods with the blood and gore.

TORMENTED 3D | (c) 2013 Well Go USA

TORMENTED – Evil bunnies, freaky little kids, a crazy Ferris wheel, more evil bunnies and a whole lot of mind f*** is what TORMENTED is all about the latest Japanese horror import from Takashi Shimizu who brought you JU-ON and the really bad SHOCK LABYRINTH, which was touted as the first 3-D film from Japan. This is also in 3-D but again it is pretty bad. In fact, TORMENTED takes many of its cues from SHOCK LABYRINTH in bringing in the bunny doll from that movie that ends up being the main antagonist in this one. But Bunny horror? Really? Japan is filled with weird sh** but this is ridiculous and the whole is it real or is it a dream thing just wears thin about a half hour into the movie. At least it isn’t little unscary blue kids running around.

13 EERIE | (c) 2013 Entertainment One

13 EERIE – Not a bad pseudo zombie flick about a group of forensic criminal justice students that go to a remote location to examine the cause of death of some cadavers in the field for a possible internship. The only problem is that the professor choose the location of 13 EERIE a former location of military experiments on a group of life sentence prisoners. Soon it becomes apparent that they are not alone and a group of very ugly and fast former prisoner zombies come looking for a snack. Of course, once you are bitten you become one and soon enough the group’s numbers fall as they look to escape the island that has become a death trap. Starring GINGER SNAPS’ Katharine Isabelle it is worth a look as the tension is pretty good and the gore is decent.

New to Blu:

HELLO DOLLY – The classic musical starring Barbara Streisand and Walter Matthau comes to video for the first time in high definition remastered using the latest technology.

THAT THING YOU DO – Because just one musical isn’t enough. The Beatles-ish drama starring Tom Hanks comes to Blu-ray for the first time.

Movies:

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY | (c) 2013 Warner Home Video

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY – Being a huge nerd, I am obviously a huge fan of the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy. I also have read the entire RINGS books as well as THE HOBBIT and I was a bit concerned about how it would be put together given the content and how it could even be made into three movies. Well, Peter Jackson put all my fears to rest within the first hour of this three-hour awesome picture that tells the tale of Bilbo Baggins (uncle of Frodo from RINGS) as a young man and taking off with a group of dwarfs in order to reclaim their homeland. We begin the story with Ian Holm, who played Bilbo in the RINGS trilogy, explaining his adventures as sort of a going away present to Frodo – as he leaves during his birthday celebration in THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RINGS. A young Bilbo (now played by Martin Freeman) begrudging joins Gandalf (again Ian McKellen) in a journey with the dwarfs.

Now this does feel a bit like a set up for what we will see in the other two movies but the moments with Bilbo and Gollum (Andy Serkis) are grand and the ginormous final battle with the orcs is something rivaled only by the awesomeness of the RINGS. Still, it does tend to drag a bit and ends abruptly but maybe in order to leave us wanting more. On Blu-ray the mass amount of special effects are really good and stand out and with a digital copy, what else could you want?

ZERO DARK THIRTY – The hunt for Osama Bin Laden has been well versed in the media with tales of Seal Team Six doing the deed and raiding a mysterious compound in Pakistan in order to find the bastard. ZERO DARK THIRTY does a great job of not only showing the entire raid but how the CIA, namely one stubborn and determined operative known only as Mia (Jessica Chastain) who searched for the terrorist for more than a decade. Yes, there are plenty of moments where the CIA uses torture to extract information but given the high value target and what is at stake it seems to be convincing that this should have happened. Debate can rage over whether or not it is the right thing to do, but when people’s lives are at stake, shouldn’t everyone do anything to help save them? That’s a morality question that never really comes into play here as it is more of a means to an end here. But the final moments with the actual raid are indeed entertaining but the drama that comes before is equally entertaining as it shows how long and how hard and difficult it was to actually find him.

THIS IS 40 | (c) 2013 Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

THIS IS 40 – Judd Apatow has made a great career in delivering a host of characters that seem to be more real than what most comedies or drama deliver. THIS IS 40 is a hilarious look at a modern family dealing with modern circumstances and tribulations with family, relationships and jobs. Yes, it’s over-the-top but how parents react and how kids react are almost genuine. Plus, this is a very funny film with some great performances from Leslie Mann as Debbie and Paul Rudd as Pete in the main characters. Albert Brooks is pure gold here as well and steals the show as Pete’s broke and very Jewish father. Even Megan Fox who plays basically a piece of eye candy is given solid material that even she can deliver well. Well worth checking out especially for those near or around 40.

LES MISERABLES | (c) 2013 Universal Home Entertainment

LES MISERABLES – You know all the flak that LES MIS took regarding the decision to actually record the songs live during filming rather than go into a professional studio to, you know, get a well sounding soundtrack? It’s legit. They definitely needed to go into a studio. I understand that director Tom Hopper wanted to make things different and make it seem more “theatre-like” rather than a film. But it shows every weakness in the stars including Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe. Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried that have been in musicals before do a more than serviceable job but the men seem to struggle. It wouldn’t be so hard if there were only a few songs, but given this film is MOSTLY songs, it hurts the overall production, which is actually impressive with great sets and costumes and everything else. Too bad about the songs.

SHADOW PEOPLE | (c) 2013 Anchor Bay Home Entertainment

SHADOW PEOPLE – A decent horror flick about an affliction known as sudden unexpected nocturnal death syndrome and a possible solution to what’s happening. Yep, SHADOW PEOPLE. A radio talk show host played by Dallas Roberts (of WALKING DEAD fame) starts getting calls from people who are having very bad nightmares. But it gets worse when those same people start dying. Mixing both real footage of people with this real syndrome and acting it is an interesting film but drags in way too many parts and becomes a bit of a bore at times. However, if you enjoyed THE FOURTH KIND, you will probably enjoy this one.

Release Date: March 12, 2013
Suggested Retail Price: $49.99

Hands down, WRECK-IT RALPH was one of the best animated films of the year. And this was a year that also had such exceptional entries as FRANKENWEENIE and PARANORMAN.

That said, I was a bit disappointed that the inferior BRAVE (good, not great) bested all of them for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars.

Thankfully, the Blu-ray/DVD combo release of WRECK-IT RALPH has arrived for home entertainment viewing and the movie is just as entertaining the second time around.

A loving ode to 8-Bit videogames of the 1980s, not to mention an ode to video gaming in general, WRECK-IT RALPH does for this world what TOY STORY did for toys.

The story follows our lead character Wreck-It Ralph (John C. Reilly) from a 1980s styled videogame called FIX-IT FELIX JR. Ralph hates being the bad guy and not getting any credit in the game and decides to leave his game and attempt to a hero elsewhere.

Escaping your game is dangerous though – if you die in another game, you die for good and with his absence for FIX-IT FELIX, JR., the game itself is threatened with getting its plug pulled.

Ralph first steps into a military game called HERO’S DUTY where he “wins” a gold metal, but upon escaping the bug-like planet, he ends up crash landing in a racing video game called SUGAR RUSH. There he meets Vanellope Von Schweetz (Sarah Silverman), a cute little outcast on her world. She’s a “glitch” and not allowed to leave the game. In order to get his gold medallion, he needs to help her out, and ultimately finds a friend and learns what being a hero really is.

Joining in the adventure is Fix-It Felix Jr. (Jack McBrayer) who tries to find Ralph as well, and save the day for the sake of his own game – and soon comes to understands Ralph’s inner struggle.

With tons of in-jokes for gamers, a beautifully realized video game world and tons of cheeky humor, WRECK-IT RALPH is a blast and perfectly directed by Rich Moore who has made a better Pixar film that Pixar did last year.

The ULTIMATE COLLECTOR’S EDITION features both a Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy – which continues to be a plus with these Disney releases and gives the kiddies (and adults) multiple platforms to enjoy the film on.

That said, Disney has also made Blu-ray its repository for all the special features that are associated with the disc. And the Blu-ray special features are plentiful and eye-opening especially in regards to the development process of the film.

The deleted scenes are not actual scenes cut from the film, but sequences and story ideas that were abandoned early on. In these scenes we find Ralph held in the brig on the HERO’S DUTY world where he finds out about a SIMS-like world where everything is wonderful and perfect. This throughline continues to be explored in the special features were we see Ralph entering that special happy world, where he realizes that’s not what he’s looking for either.

Director Moore has commentary throughout these scenes, explaining why the story points were abandoned. The SIMS world, awhile interesting, took you out of the more contained video game world of the film. In order for it to work, Ralph would have had to travel into the video game arcade owner’s personal computer or something like that, since SIMS-like games aren’t found at arcades.

There are also deleted scenes showcasing a WIZARD OF OZ-like adventure for Vanellope, Ralph and Fix-It Felix, Jr. who actually showed up earlier to help Ralph. King Candy wasn’t as overtly villainous as he is in the finished film as we discover in these deleted moments as well.

A solid making of WRECK-IT RALPH is also included called “Bit By Bit: Creating The Worlds Of WRECK-IT RALPH” and The Gamer’s Guide To WRECK-IT RALPH (hosted by Chris Hardwick) is part of a thing called Disney Intermission. These are fun little factoids about the film (including game cameo information) that you can click on throughout the process of watching the film. It’s a nice use of Blu-ray technology, and you can watch all these little micro-features during the film or all in one chunk.

Additionally, the Academy Award winning PAPERMAN short is also included on both the DVD and Blu-ray. Deserving of its Oscar, it’s a sweet little love story, shot in black and white and incorporating both traditional cel animation and computer trickery.

WRECK-IT RALPH proves that Disney can compete with its own in-house company Pixar in making animation gold again. Now I can’t wait for the sequel.
