Family cars have advanced in major ways over the last ten years accommodating changing lifestyles, needs and trying to make the classic family SUV into something more stylish, hip and functionable.

The 2014 MITSUBISHI OUTLANDER is one of these next generation vehicles that is packed with gadgets, gizmos and technology galore. It understands families want space (there are seven seats in the car), but the ability to reconfigure the car easily to transport heavy items (hence, seats that fold back down in many different combinations).

We test drove the Outlander on a trip to Las Vegas and the Outlander was an impressive ride. Once you get over trying to learn everything the vehicle is capable of, it becomes fun trying out its various functions and controls and putting them to the test.

THE OUTSIDE

The vehicle looks nice. It doesn’t have a stodgy SUV feel, and instead offers up a much hipper vibe. It also comes off as more roomy than it looks like from the outside – with the inside feeling far bigger than the exterior hints at.

THE INSIDE

Seven seats is a big deal and the leg space is comfortable and roomy whether it’s the front, middle or back seats.

All the seats push down, allowing for ample space in transporting furniture or other non-people items.

DRIVING PERFORMANCE

The Outlander is equipped with something called Super All-Wheel Control which allows the car to react to various weather conditions. So you get normal driving conditions, snow, an off-road mode and an AWC ECO Mode which allows for gas conservation by only sending power to two wheels during regular driving conditions.

It took some getting use to, figuring out which function worked best for the various freeway and backroads we were driving on. And at times the AWC Eco Mode did make for a bumpy ride at times until the right mode was selected.

The Outlander also comes with a V6 engine, so it packs a pretty powerful wallop, especially while heading through the backroads getting to Vegas.

There’s also the benefit of Paddle Shifters, which allow you the control of manuel shifting, despite the vehicle being automatic.

MISC.

The Outlander has a newer function that’s on most cars now which is a “Lane Veering Warning.” Whenever you start to veer, a beeping noise warns you to stay in your lane.

When you’re in Cruise Control, if you get too close to another car, you get a huge warning on the dash to “Brake.”

I also loved the fact that when you open the trunk, all you have to do is press a button on the trunk itself and it closes and locks automatically. This eliminates the messy issue of grabbing groceries but no hands available to shut the door manually.

The Outlander also saves on gas. We got a lot of mileage of the vehicle without having to gas up constantly. That’s one of the main pluses for a car of this size. You don’t have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on gas and the mileage is excellent.

The Outlander is not without a few hiccups. It doesn’t automatically come with a CD player, which is more likely a function of where technology is going anyway with MP3 players becoming the standard. That said, the problem with hooking your iPod into the system is it’s not very easy to find the songs or tracks you’re looking for. You don’t have manual control over your device and trying to synch up to what you’re interested to is not very easy while driving. As soon as car companies figure out how to make that part more intuitive, I will happily forego my CD player.

Another issue was the navigation system, which at times was spotty and overly complicated.

OVERVIEW

Aside from a couple of technology pet peeves, The Outlander is a great multi-purpose vehicle. It gets the job done and at a great starting price, it gives you more for your money than other cars in this same league.
