Life is changing for Elena and Caroline, or so they think on the latest episode of THE VAMPIRE DIARIES – “True Lies.” Their roommate Megan who was killed in the premiere was listed as cause of death a suicide and as Caroline tells Elena “no mention of the gaping hole in her neck.” Elena is still wondering why Megan had a picture of her father in her wallet. On top of all of this mystery they discover that the person who signed the death certificate was Dr. Wesley Maxfield, none other then the micro-biotics teacher. Deciding to both attend his class and infiltrate like Damon did with the council back in Mystic Falls, but Dr. Maxfield realizes they are freshman, and tells them they are in the wrong class. Jesse (Kendrick Sampson), who they met on their first day at college is very interested in Caroline…as a love interest…will she forget Tyler?

In the meantime, Silas shows up on campus and Elena thinks it is Stefan and tells Damon who she is speaking with Stefan is there, but Damon knows that is not Stefan. Damon then shows up on campus and confronts Silas while he is looking for Elena. Silas had mind-controlled Elena and tells her to get Damon alone, weaken him and kill him. Taking Damon back to the dorm she pours the verbane water (that was Megan’s) down his throat, which weakens him and ties him up…and every time she gets angry she wants to kill him. Damon tells Elena to think of Stefan, which works and breaks the mind-control. That is after she stabs herself and tries to blow them up with the gas line she pulled…lucky the matches didn’t work!

After getting a phone call from the sheriff that the safe has been found, Elena decides to leave with Damon to go back to Mystic Falls, as Elena has felt deep inside that Stefan is suffering, lonely and in a lot of pain. She tells Caroline good-bye and she will be back soon.

Bumping into Dr. Maxfield he tells her he would like to get together and talk to her, and that he knew of her father, but she tells him she is leaving. Who is Dr. Maxfield? How does he know of Elena’s father?

On the run are Jeremy and Katherine, along with Matt. Silas has mind-controlled the whole town to be on the lookout for someone that looks exactly like Elena Gilbert. Hiding out in the forest as Matt goes looking for wood for the fire, he runs into Silas. Silas realizes he can’t mind-control him and touches his head to find that The Travelers have invaded Matt body and mind. Who are The Travelers? Silas kills him, but he is wearing the Gilbert ring which means he can’t really die. While he is dead and goes to the other side he runs into Bonnie, who finally has a shoulder to cry on about her dad and herself, but unfortunately when Matt gets back into his body he remembers nothing.

While Matt is dead Jeremy confronts Silas and because he is a Hunter he knows Silas’ abilities don’t work on him and he tells Silas “I am the Hunter and I work out” as he tackles Silas, you had to laugh at that line! Along comes Katherine to save the day and shoots Silas, but of course he is immortal and will come back.

The greatest line in the episode is when Katherine goes, “ I’ve lived over 500 years, been hunted by a hybrid (referring to Klaus) and now I’m being defeated by a sinus infection!” Katherine is starting to realize that being human has its downfalls.

Back in Mystic Falls Sheriff Liz Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) has agreed to search the quarry in search of Stefan.  Finding the safe in the woods, instead of the quarry she waits for Damon and Elena to arrive. Damon opens the safe, but inside is not Stefan, but a body that had been drained of blood. Stefan is back…as the Ripper!

It seems there are a lot of new storylines coming up and this episode makes you wonder which way the writers will be taking it. How much longer will Silas be around? Where is Stefan? Is Megan really dead? Is she related to Elena? Does Jesse know about Caroline and Elena? What is the girl Travelers agenda (since she killed her partner)?
