At today’s Winter 2013 TCA Cable Day, COUGAR TOWN executive producer and co-creator Bill Lawrence spoke about the transition of his ensemble comedy moving from ABC to TBS for Season 4.

“I’ve been trying to kill this show for years,” says Lawrence with a laugh. “There’s now commercials for our show. It’s insane. I’ve been involved personally with a lot of shows that had weird life spans. I think unless you’re lucky enough to be a hit today, your goal in network and off network TV is to stay alive. We’ve done so because the show is good. Transition-wise, it was easy because [TNT President and Head of Programming] Michael Wright was a fan of the show. He said, ‘I want you to deliver the same show I liked the first three years.’”

And Lawrence confirms COUGAR TOWN is the same series it was on ABC with storylines involving the new marriage of Jules (Courteney Cox) and Grayson (Josh Hopkins), a budding new romance between Jules’ son Travis (Dan Byrd) and her best friend Laurie (Busy Phillips) and of course tons of wine drinking.

“[It’s great] being embraced by TBS and the marketing team,” says Phillips. “We know the show is funny, we like what we’re doing, [and now] somebody wants to embrace it and get the word out.”

COUGAR TOWN makes its TBS debut on January 8.
