You can add ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER to the list of anticipated summer movies. Not much has been seen from the revisionist history tale directed by Timur Bekmambetov until an exclusive scene and the brand new trailer that made its debut to a rapid crowd at Wondercon 2012 in Anaheim, CA today.

Vampires, flying axes, and incredible train chase – this thing looks incredible and it was clear that Bekmambetov, screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith and star Benjamin Walker were thrilled to finally reveal some of the cool secrets from the film.

“He’s one of the greatest American heroes, so to see him as one of our greatest American action heroes was right around the corner,” says Smith who based the screenplay on his book of the same name. “It’s a 19th Century movie with a 21st Century aesthetic to it. People will come to this for it to be a kick-ass action movie, but subconsciously getting some strangely accurate history.”

For Walker, he sees his Lincoln as a bit of a badass.

“As an American, I want to know my leaders are strong, have the capacity to make hard decisions and to cut some heads off,” says Walker.

Another important thing, according to Grahame-Smith, is doing the movie unapologetically.

“The title, as we all know, is absurd – it’s ridiculous because it’s so over-the-top,” says Smith. “You needed to do it in a very straight forward way. You can’t wink at the audience once. We’re doing this straight forward and no going to blink.”

Adapting his book was another issue, since he had to “murder some of the things right off the bat.”

“We realized we didn’t a central villain in my book, so that’s the problem when you’re making a two-hour movie,” says Grahame-Smith. “My book also didn’t have a kick-ass train sequence. I forgot to write that in the book.”

Wrapping things up, Smith says there are two very important distinctions about ABRAHAM LINCOLN: VAMPIRE HUNTER.

One, this isn’t TWILIGHT.

“Our vampires don’t sparkle,” he says, and then adds, “and we’re the only vampire movie this summer with a President.”
