Either Emily Thorne (Emily VanCamp) is remarkably good at moving with the flow of others’ movement in her great quest to wreak REVENGE on Victoria (Madeleine Stowe) and Conrad (Henry Czerny) Grayson, or we’re supposed to believe that she’s able to manipulate everything. I believe the former, but in “Justice,” you have still have to stretch the old willful suspension of disbelief muscle. Some of it may be that there’s just too much going on in one episode.

The main thrust is that Daniel’s (Josh Bowman) trial is getting underway – we’ve jumped forward several months in our narrative. Declan (Connor Paolo) goes on the witness stand to testify that no one was around when Tyler was shot, never mind that he and Charlotte (Christa B. Allen) were right there. Declan is trying to protect his older brother Jack (Nick Wechsler),who is still looking for Amanda Clarke, who was presumably the figure in the hoodie that Charlotte and Declan orginally told the police about. Only Jack comes home and is subpoenaed to testify as a hostile witness.

On top of this, Victoria has her latest strong man threatening one of the jurors – which Emily and Nolan (Gabriel Mann) have observed, thanks to Nolan’s whale cam. And Victoria has her affair with her artist friend going, which Conrad is onto. The problem is, Victoria spilled the beans about David Clarke (aka Emily’s father) to her lover, so Conrad doesn’t exactly get anywhere when he threatens the artist. Oh, and Daniel has fallen off the wagon after seeing Emily talking with Jack a couple times and is really getting angry with Emily. Which cause even more problems when Daniel violates his house arrest to visit with Emily and gets sent back to prison.

Emily tells Victoria she was merely trying to get Jack to tell her something, but that Jack doesn’t know anything. This is because Emily doesn’t want Jack to get targeted by the Graysons to get Daniel off the hook. After all, that’s basically what happened to her father. Jack, however, has a blood-stained hoodie that Amanda was wearing, which Emily finally gets a hold of, and in a masterful stroke of brinksmanship, she stashes it in the car of the strong man, Lee Mason, and gets him arrested. So now he’s on the hook for the murder and when he calls Victoria, he let it be known that he will take her down with him.

And if all that makes sense, then you’re doing better than I am. I feel like I’m breathing hard just writing it. There is a decided tendency for episodes in this series either to be all back story with not much happening, or with everything happening at once and you feel like you’ve run the hundred meters at the end just trying to keep up. Given how close we are to the season finale, I suspect the pace is not going to let up. If only we can get some questions answered in the process.
