With “The Crack in the Code,” BONES delivers an intriguingly macabre case at the same time it eases forward the relationship (and housing) negotiations of Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz) as the birth of their daughter looms ever closer.

When a gore-covered spine and skull are found at the site of a (fictional)Washington,D.C.monument, with the words “Where’s the rest of me?” scrawled in blood nearby, this is only the beginning of the weirdness. The spine turns out to have had all of the pieces rearranged and restrung on a piece of human intestine, and the blood turns out to have come from five different FBI agents (all still living – they had recently donated to a blood drive).

Conspiracy theorist Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) is convinced the restrung vertebrae contain a message of some kind. They also turn out to contain a computer virus that gets into the Jeffersonian system. The clues eventually lead to self-styled computer “Hacktivist” Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds), who is under house arrest with an ankle monitoring device. The monitor shows that Pelant hasn’t left his house, but he’s clearly guilty – Booth and Sweets (John Francis Daley) just haven’t figured out how to prove it by the episode’s conclusion.

On another front, when Sweets finds a birthday present for Daisy via a Federal property seizure auction, Booth gets the idea to go house-hunting via the same route. He finds a structure in need of enormous fixing. Luckily for Booth, Brennan easily sees the “bones” of the house and thinks it will be the perfect place, once repaired, to raise their daughter.

“Code” demonstrates that everything most viewers have enjoyed about the Brennan/Booth pairing has not only survived but flourished as the couple grows closer. He’s still emotional, she’s still analytical, they still clash but wind up happily supporting each other.

The episode also has some swell dialogue. When district attorney Caroline (Patricia Belcher) learns from Booth that he and Brennan haven’t settled on a home yet and says “Oh” ominously, Booth asks her what she means. Her reply, beautifully delivered by Belcher: “I figured that ‘Oh’ implies all the potential problems. Why gild the lily?”

It’s great to see a real puzzle in the procedural, although we wonder why no one has so far (that we know of) checked the ankle monitor for tampering. A virus delivered via skeletal remains is a brilliant and suitably BONES twist. As for the villain,Leeds is both beamingly personable and quite creepy as Pelant, the embodiment of a very bright sociopath, someone who makes us worry what he’ll do next.

“The Crack in the Code” strikes exactly the right balance for BONES, with the character material and the case of the week (or weeks, in the case of this cliffhanger) receiving the right weight, emotion and entertainment value.
