THE VAMPIRE DIARIES never fails to please in terms of cliffhanger endings and surprises rolling in that are rarely suspected or even hinted at. Last week’s cliffhanger saw Caroline (Candice Accola) gunned down by Carol Lockwood (Susan Walters) with a Vervain tranquilizer, that was a brilliant ending but I think the new episode “The Hybrid” has an even better one (SPOILER ALERT) bringing back Caroline’s father played by Jack Coleman from HEROES!

So let’s address that first and foremost. In the first season Sherriff Forbes (Marguerite MacIntyre) has some scenes where we learned that she was raising Caroline all by herself because her husband was gay and ran off with another man. Is this still true, or was all of that a ruse so that Mr. Forbes could go off and be an extremely active part of the secret group that hunts down and takes care of vampires? I think it’s more than a little ironic that Jack Coleman is once again playing father to a blonde popular high school girl, and his “wife” from HEROES Ashley Crow, is playing grandmother to an only slightly younger girl over on THE SECRET CIRCLE.

Back to the Lockwood family for a moment.  Tyler (Michael Trevino) in a really gallant attempt to save Caroline from his own mother comes out of the doghouse and shows her his secret self. Well done Tyler. But, now Mom knows what you really are, and what does this mean for your future?

Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) is busy dealing with dead girlfriends Vicki (Kayla Ewell) and Anna (Malese Jow). Both of them want something. Vicki claims to be able to return from the dead, but Anna tells Jeremy not to trust her. Are they really the ghost of Jeremy’s dead ex’s or are they something else pretending to be those particular girls in order to get Jeremy to help them cross over? I personally like Anna more; only because Vicki was a hot mess when she was around, and I really don’t have any desire to see her come back to Mystic Falls.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) are dancing their tightrope dance even closer together now! I am desperate to see what happens when she realizes that she is actually in love with him and Stefan (Paul Wesley). I think I’d rather see her with Damon, simply because I get tired of moping vampires in pretty much and kind of vampire fiction whether it is books, TV, or movies. Damon is fun and dangerous and sexy and I’d like to see him and Elena give it a shot. It could crash and burn but it more than likely will be a wild ride.

Of course, I haven’t talked about the main plot of this episode which is Klaus (Joseph Morgan) trying to build a Hybrid werewolf/vampire army. I think it’s a given that he now knows that the doppelganger is alive. The look he gives Stefan is pretty telling, so it’s only a matter of time before he returns to Mystic Falls to finish the job he started. Klaus will have to be killed off, but before they do, everyone should stock up on his blood in bottles or packs so they have it around in case of werewolf bites!
