It can be said that a lot of the ABC Family genre style shows have the same feel and texture to them. They have young casts and deal with all manner of problems from family drama to growing up to friend drama to those dreaded parental sex talks. Of course, all of that is taking place against a backdrop of whatever the type of genre happens to be. In the case of KYLE XY, the last ABC Family show that I watched from front to back it involved a kind of science fiction drama asking the essential questions of what makes a real person and are scientists allowed to play God?

Now, I’m watching ABC Family’s latest genre offering THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING. Yes, to repeat numerous other critics out there , the series does feel like BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER. Our heroine Chloe (Skyler Samuels) has two sidekick best friends Amy (Grace Phipps) and Paul (Ki Hong Lee), and there are mentor characters that watch over Chloe as she comes into her own with her new cat powers and role as the Uniter of the Mai.

“Girls Night Out” moves the story a little bit more forward than we have had in previous weeks. Fans on the Team Alek (Benjamin Stone) probably are screaming this week at his complete and total absence from this episode. Fans on Team Brian (Grey Damon) on the other hand are satiated with all of the romantic drama and will be leave or won’t he generated during the episode.

If we want to put this in a BUFFY comparison frame this episode is “Bad Girls”, where the heroine tries to cut loose and lose some of her responsibility only to discover that she can’t ever really do that because she is the chosen one. Instead of Faith (Eliza Dushku) Chloe has not one but two bad girls who come to town from South America to show her how to party like a true Mai.

Nikki (Melanie Kannokada) and Lilah (Floriana Lima) have no where near the same rules about living amongst humans that the San Francisco Mai have, and they have no qualms about taking human life if it amuses them. The two actresses are pretty delightful in their first scene where they enter Chloe’s shop slinking back and forth like the Siamese cats from LADY AND THE TRAMP.

The basic big deals with this episode are that Brian decides to work for his father so he can stay and investigate his mom’s murder and be close to Chloe, Chloe finds out that it is indeed her father that she is emailing with, and Paul tried to go all the way with Amy and completely blows it.

I like the series, but I need to see things stepped up. I have a feeling that situations and stories will get more intense as we head further into the season, but so far the writing feels kind of like and icing version of telling much larger stories.
