Two weeks ago, Chloe King (Skyler Samuels) fought off drug dealers. This week on THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING, she fends off a violent ex-boyfriend of her clothing store boss.

Next week, a bunch of goons looking to extort local business owners shows up and Chloe has to get her claws ready to pounce.

Okay, so the last part hasn’t been hinted yet on the show, but the way things are going, I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens sooner or later. It’s just as cliched as those other silly story points, so extortion goons isn’t that far of a stretch.

So yes, yet again, CHLOE KING proves to be a show that’s big on setting up huge mythological possibilities and then pays them off with abusive ex-boyfriends and drug dealers.

With “All Apologies,” I’m still confused as to what kind of show it wants to be.

Last week, Chloe learned that she’s the Uniter – the one who will bring Mai and humans together. This week she learns she’s an empath – she can feel what other people are feeling.

This leads her to sense something is wrong with her boss and there’s definitely something wrong with her boss’s ex-boyfriend.

Meanwhile, Jasmine (Alyssa Diaz) and Alek (Benjamin Stone) try to train Chloe to be the best cat person she can be, while Chloe’s best friends Amy (Grace Phipps) and Paul (Ki Hong Lee) are jealous that they’re not spending enough time with her.

In fact, everyone seems to have some issue with Chloe this episode – including her mom (Amy Pietz) who senses she’s hiding something and her wannabe boyfriend Brian (Grey Damon) who is hiding secrets of his own.

Apparently Brian’s mom was mysteriously murdered by thugs, but that’s not the whole story. He has a key to a safety deposit box that is supposed to reveal the truth about his mother’s death. Brian’s dad also happens to be part of a group called The Order who wants Chloe dead (and it’s hinted he may have had something to do with his wife’s death).

Oh, and Valentina (Alicia Coppola) threatens Brian’s dad that if he tries to hurt Chloe. If he doesn’t listen – she’ll take it out on him and his son.

See, there’s actually things happening on the show, but a show can’t sustain itself on building mythology alone. We keep hearing about all these important things regarding Chloe, and each new thing seems to be getting more interesting, yet the rest of the episode just sits there like a wet noodle. Instead of Chloe facing an interesting adversary for a change, it’s hokey pokey police drama crap like, yes, I’ll say it again, drug dealers and rageaholic ex-boyfriends.

It’s clear, at some point, Chloe will need to embrace being an unlikely superhero with her close knit group of friends forming some kind of 21st Century Scooby gang. But what will their actual goals be? Who are the villains? And how will this make the series more interesting, faster paced and moving toward something other that utter boredom.

Yet again, THE NINE LIVES OF CHLOE KING travels the middle-of-the-road. I see so much promise with this show that it’s painful to watch when all it seems capable of being is simply being average. For an extraordinary character like King, this is the biggest travesty of all.
