REVENGE is the kind of glossy nighttime soap that the major broadcast networks used to produce with flair in the ‘80s. Less camp than DYNASTY or the more contemporary DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES, REVENGE nevertheless seems to be centered around the potential for the mother of all catfights, with the difference that the person stirring up all the misdirection and havoc is actually our heroine.

Emily VanCamp plays Emily Thorne, a mysterious and charming newcomer to the wealthy enclave in the Hamptons where she arrives in the summer. Except Emily isn’t really a newcomer to the area, nor is she even really Emily. Instead, she’s actually Amanda Clarke, returned to her childhood home to avenge the wrongs done to her late father (James Tupper, who we see in flashbacks) by many of the locals, particularly the feared and powerful Victoria Grayson (Madeleine Stowe). We know at the outset that “Emily” is engaged to Victoria’s troubled son Daniel (Joshua Bowman) and that something bad happens to Daniel on the beach during the engagement party. Then we flash back to Emily renting a beach house, and then flash further back to see who she really is and what she’s so vengeful about. Strangely, only the town ne’er do well knows who Emily really is; even her childhood friend (Nick Wechsler) who is now sweet on her doesn’t recognize Amanda, although his dog (which used to be hers) does.

The long reach of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO can be detected here in the broad strokes, and to the credit of writer Mike Kelley, REVENGE does have a bit of a novelistic feel. However, so far it’s less like a slam-bang thriller and more like one of those bitchy beach books where people are exposing affairs and other secret embarrassments rather than going for something larger. There are a lot of story threads to follow, and it’s all nicely done if this is the sort of fare one appreciates, but in the first episode, at least, the plot mechanics take up so much space that there’s little room for the kind of character and nuance that would make REVENGE stand out from the serial pack.

We can’t tell yet if we’re meant to sympathize with Emily/Amanda unconditionally, or whether we’re worried she’s going to turn into a creature whose quest for vengeance drives her to wound the innocent. VanCamp is interesting to watch while we figure this out. Stowe certainly plays Victoria as a worthy opponent for anyone – she is both elegant and formidable. We are made curious as to exactly what it is that we’re seeing in the opening of the show and how it comes to pass, as well as what happened years ago to bring everyone to this point. For those with enough curiosity and appreciation of rich people on the beach glitz, REVENGE should be fun. Otherwise, it’s decent but unexceptional.

  3. A pilot that unfortunately capitalized on the tired, soapy meme of syrupy smiles that dissolve to grim, determined malice, over and over. Rather unwatchable in 2011.

    • WHAT? I really enjoy tbe new TV show Revenge. It’s an awesome show. The music “down by the rivers edge” is the perfect accompaniment to the unfolding drama.

  6. I thought it was great. A little something for all ages over 18. I will for sure watch and see how this unfolds.

  7. I liked the Count of Monte Cristo concept and the great Hampton location shots. We’ll see if the Hamptons exteriors were just for the pilot. I hope they do keep shooting there, it made the show different, but the may start substituting something in Los Angeles to keep costs down. Not sure if I have the patience to wait-out how the story unfolds. We’ll see.

  8. I was amazed that they cast Madeline Stowe in this show,’Revenge’, most likely co-incidence, given she was Kevin Costner’s love interest in “Revenge” on the big screen. Really think she is a great actress and I liked the show very much. Hope it ‘survives’ the critics.

  9. uggg.. Simon Cowell has destroyed America. Haha. All these overstuffed reviews are so boring. Everyone is a critic now-a-days. I actually enjoyed it. It is has this ‘Pretty Little Liars’ meets ‘Dirty Sexy Money” feeling. Im not usually into this sort of thing but it has the right vibe. The Pilot was very well written, they crammed a lot of background in without it seeming too rushed or forced, and that is very big to me. Its probably not going to end up being a classic, but its a really great kickoff to the fall lineup.

  10. Please tell me where the white dress that was off the shoulder can be found.
It was worn by Emily Vancamp when she was on the boat.
    Can’t wait to here!

  12. Nothing can touch night time drama like West Wing or Brothers & Sisters. Of all the new series I’ve seen, this one, Revenge, is mildly better than the worst – the worst being “unforgettable” which is extremely forgettable ! Watched 1 minute of Pan Am pilot and turned it off. At that hour, if it’s not great, I’d go to bed or even better turn to PBS and Master Piece Theater, which is always excels it’s programs. “Revenge” ? I’m not sure I’ll stay with it, but my mind is open, but wouldn’t go out of my way to follow it. Although it’s a break from the boring and uncreative plethora of American detective cops and robbers sleeper copy cat shows. the best was Boston Legal. TV is getting really bad, with PBS as the only exception.

  14. Not bad. A few mistakes, however. No way can that dog still be alive. Retrievers just don’t live that long, and if Sammy was a freak of nature, he would not be in that state of health. One minute we see the Grayson home, which seems in a distance, then later we see Victoria checking out Emily and it’s as though the homes we very close.

  19. This show captivated me from episode 1. What could be better than to watch rich people get their comeuppance one dastardly evil person at a time. Especially in this age of GFC and Wall Street ponzi schemes. Thanks to NPR’s Happy hour – I too want to shout “REVENGE” half way through the show.

  20. This series “Revenge” looks very interesting but I don’t want to start watching the episodes without watching the Pilot Episode. Does anyone know where I can view it at or can someone attaché a link to the site on this thread? I, as well as others would be extremely greatful.
