“Original Song” is an interesting GLEE episode in that it really didn’t have a whole lot of plot threads running through the episode. Sure there were some revisiting of dangling threads from this seasons various plots, but the emphasis was on the music, and more often than not on the original music for the show.

The one MAJOR plot line that finally paid off was Blaine (Darren Criss) and Kurt (Chris Colfer) got together! There was a joyous outcry in the gay community when Blaine finally realized that he was in love with Kurt, and the fact that Kurt got a real first kiss, and will have a real relationship moving forward is yet another big step for television and gay rights advocates! Nicely done Ryan Murphy and thanks for the payoff.

So this was the big Regionals episode, and it was a big push to have something to blow Sue Sylvester’s ( Jane Lynch) team off the stage with. Most of the original songs in the episode were fun from Puck’s (Mark Salling) “Big Ass Heart” to Santana’s (Naya Rivera) “Trouty Mouth”, but Mercedes’ (Amber Riley) “Hell to the No!” was probably my favorite out of the quicker original song sets.

There is an interesting evil and shallow evolution in Quinn’s (Dianna Agron) character – she made the out loud announcement (at least to herself) that she is using Finn (Cory Monteith) to get her Prom Queen crown. To go with her new evil-ish attitude she got a hideous hair and clothes makeover that made her look a young Republican out doing her duty for her political party. But, it looks like Finn is still in love with Rachel (Lea Michele), so Quinn’s plans may just disintegrate.

Speaking of politics, Kathy Griffin and Loretta Devine’s guest appearances were AWESOME! I loved the fact that Griffin was playing exactly the opposite of all of her personal beliefs and espoused values, and Devine was a former pole dancer /turned nun. Genius writing on those two characters.

We had a very male to male rendition of “Candles” by Kurt and Blaine this episode and the Warblers also sang Maroon Five’s “Misery” and Pink’s “Raise Your Glass” all of which make me want to buy their CD when it comes out. Kurt also did a lovely rendition of “Blackbird” which seemed more normal than his usual high tenor range (which was a nice switch).

The two original GLEE songs “Get it Right” and “Loser Like Me” were fantastic and they will undoubtedly go on to be hits for the show and the cast, and I have a feeling they WILL be performing them at this year’s GLEE tour.

The closing note of the episode was Rachel’s speech, and it was delivered with such sincerity by Lea Michele that I doubt there was a dry eye watching the show. All in all a great episode and lots and lots of fun music!
