“The Wedding of River Song” is the series finale for this latest round of DOCTOR WHO, it brings everything with the character of River Song (Alex Kingston) to full circle closure, deals with some dangling plot threads, and opens up new mysteries for future series.

This is the inevitable episode where The Doctor (Matt Smith) is destined to die at the hands of River Song next to Lake Silencio in Utah. It’s a fixed point in time that can’t be changed, or can it? River refuses to kill The Doctor and causes some BIG problems with the timestream. All of time starts happening at once and all different elements across time overlap as if they have always been that way.

Honestly, people rag on Steven Moffat because he loves to use the timey wimey wibbly wobbly stuff to his maximum advantage on DOCTOR WHO, but his usage of it makes this episode completely off the wall for most of it, and even more fun! The sequences taking place in time that is all of time are in a word, brilliant! I love the fact that Winston Churchill (Ian McNeice) is the Holy Roman Emperor, that there are Pterodactyls in the parks that are considered vermin, and all of the random bits and bobs like the elevated steam engine trains running everywhere. Of course, one of the best snippets was the return of Simon Callow as Charles Dickens, who we haven’t seen since the time of the 9th Doctor way back in 2005!

The blending of all of time made the story unpredictable and that’s the whole reason I love it and feel that this is a satisfying ending for this sixth series.

In “Let’s Kill Hitler” we got introduced to the Teselecta who work as a kind of miniaturized time police righting wrongs in history. I knew that was going to come into play somehow later on, and as soon as they turned up in this episode I knew how The Doctor was going to cheat death. Well done. Of course I originally thought it would be accomplished using the ‘flesh’ in some way.

Having Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill) back on board in this episode not only gives us the chance to see them in action, but also to finally get resolution with the fact that their child was stolen from them and turned into a weapon to use against The Doctor. Amy’s decision to kill Madame Kovarian (Frances Barber) is an interesting one, and it remains to be seen how Amy’s character will develop with these darker overtones in future series.

I really loved the ending with Amy, River (fresh from “Flesh and Stone”), and Rory enjoying a glass of wine in the Pond’s backyard. It makes me feel better that they have gotten to develop a family bond and a very unusual family dynamic that seems to work for them.

River is now The Doctor’s wife, and I’m sure she’ll pop up here and there, but I have a feeling that the overreaching storyline with her is finally at a close. Moffat has accomplished some nice storytelling with this arc, and the final moments of this episode set the stage for not only a much larger mystery, but also the final moments of Matt Smith as The Doctor, when the 11th falls. Of course, who knows how far down the road that will be? Hopefully a long ways off as I am really settling into Matt Smith as The Doctor and don’t want him to go anywhere for a good long while!
