COMMUNITY is usually so good, but when it makes a mis-step or two, it’s quite noticeable

Granted, a mediocre or flawed episode of COMMUNITY is still more entertaining than most sitcoms, but still, the Season Three premiere “Biology 101” left me a little bit cold.

It starts off with a pretty funny musical number about the show not being as weird as it was the first two seasons, but then continues along its anarchic comedic path. Most of the episode is about whether Pierce (Chevy Chase) is being let back into the study group and Jeff (Joel McHale) getting kicked out of Biology class and not able to be part of the study group.

Jeff loses his mind during this separation and realizes he has the potential of becoming Pierce after a weird 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY inspired dream sequence.

The school is also broke, because Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) pissed off Vice Dean Laybourne (a hilarious John Goodman) who is part of Greendale’s Air Conditioning Repair Annex (the far more successful and profitable than the rest of the school).

Abed (Danny Pudi) is also traumatized that COUGAR TOWN (on ABC) has been held to midseason. It provides a few more shout-outs to that series that has also paid tribute back to COMMUNITY.

There are random bits of funny sprinkled throughout, but Jeff is incredibly abrasive and all over the place this episode and I actually was put off that the show acknowledged being so weird and empty-promising it wouldn’t be that way this year. I think the show should wear its weirdness as a badge of honor and not kowtow to fans, new viewers or NBC to be something it isn’t.

It’s grown into a solid comedy. It’s original, fresh and is never predictable. NBC isn’t doing enough to grow it into a super-sized hit, but as long as it stays the course, COMMUNITY will continue to be one of the few bright spots on NBC’s otherwise bust of a schedule.
