X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is now in theaters! Many of you might read this series of editorials before you see the movie, and some after, but be warned there are some spoilerish elements in play. Basically, our idea was to create a series of character guides to the main players of FIRST CLASS, to give people a bit of a working knowledge of where the characters in the movie have their comic book origins, and how those origins compare to their big screen counterparts. This is a taste of the comics for those who haven’t spent their lives reading and archiving these books for decades, and who just want a quick who’s who and what’s what guide. So read on true believers and find out more about Marvel’s merry band of mutants!

IN THE COMICS:

REAL NAME: Henry “Hank” McCoy

FIRST APPEARANCE: [Uncanny] X-Men #1- 1963

Beast is one of the only characters in our compiled mutant guide that actually was a member of Xavier’s first class of mutants. His early abilities besides his intellect, were amazing acrobatic skill, and speed and agility (due in large part to his enlarged hands and feet). Henry McCoy is also a brilliant scientist, and while working for the Brand Corporation he took a mutant hormone extract which gave him his (originally grey) fuzzy beast look. Beast has been and founded teams in the Marvel universe. He has been part of the X-men, Avengers, Defenders, and X-Factor. In the last decade his mutation has changed his appearance yet again to the now familiar ‘kitty Beast’. He is currently a member of the Secret Avengers headed by Steve Rogers (Captain America)

IN THE MOVIE:

Beast is Hank McCoy (played by Nicholas Hoult) and his only mutation in the film are his large ape-like feet, which he is obsessed with getting rid of. Beast spends more time worried about physical appearance than he ever seemed to in the comics, and as a result creates a ‘cure’ which turns him into the blue furred beast that everyone is so familiar with. The basic principles of Beast are all the same with the super I.Q. and acrobatic abilities so he’s pretty darn close to his comic counterpart.
